NYU or Columbia

definitely NYU!!!

Columbia is ghetto...it is falling in prestige too, while NYU had its most selective year this year and is growing in prestige

nyu, no question about it...columbia people are toooooo dorky. nyu people are very intelligent, yet they balance an extra curricular and social life.

PLUS!! nYU stern is so hard to get into...dont pass up this opportunity.

Columbia people are too dorky?

Wow.

i visited there and all the people at columbia are wierd and anti-social. its wierd because they are in ny and u would think theyd be outgoing, but they dont like people. they are a bit snobby and selfabsorbed as well as nerdy and no too great-looking

Columbia, by far.

Stern, like most of NYU, is an Ivy League (in particular Columbia U) reject school - don't let these people tell you otherwise, they are just completely biased.

99.9% of the kids at Stern did not get into the Ivys, so are going to Stern by default. Also a good 80% of Stern is socially awkward. Worse comes to worse you can transfer, and that would not be hard coming from Columbia. Also, basing your college decision on having sex with girls = lame.

Columbia students not being outgoing and fun?

Nyu Is The Number One Dream School In The Nation
Stern Grads Are Looked Upon More Favorably By Grad Schools Because Of The Tougher Curriculum And Better Preparation
Columbians Are Socially Awkward
Columbia Is In The Ghetto
Nyu Is More Concentrated On Its Students
Nyu Undergrads Can Take Classes With Graduate Students (upon Request)
Nyu Is Becoming More Prestigious As The Ivy Leagues Fall Behind
Nyu's Student Body Is Diverse And Beautiful
Nyu's Student Body Is Active And Outgoing

Nyu By Far

look I was jus giving the OP my opinion... The OP stated "Prestige is very important for me."... thats why I said columbia, no question about it... I see NYU- Stern as an amazing school but I wouldn't consider it as prestigious as Columbia. However the rate at which it is progressing, it may very well match Columbia at some point in the future.. not now though... Thats the way I see it. Some of you may think otherwise... fair enough.

I think it's a win-win situation. Columbia is an Ivy League school and extremely well respected. NYU is well respected too of course. It may depend on your major as to which school is better for you. I think NYU's location in the middle of downtown Manhattan is more attractive then Columbia's location but that's my opinion. In the end it depends on you to make the most of whatever school you decide on.

No way is Columbia dropping in reputation, nor NYU close to catching up. But don't expect people to tell you this on the NYU board. How many of them were actually accepted to NYU and Columbia?

Btw, my D was accepted into Stern, but not into Columbia; she is actually going elsewhere:)

i don't get it, people here on the nyu board keep saying "stern is so hard to get into, dont pass up this opportunity" or "stern is just as prestigious" as columbia." Stern is a great school but it's not up to par with columbia college in terms of selectivity and prestige. There are kids ranked in the 40s and 50s in my class (of 360) including three of my close friends getting into stern without amazing SATs, or hooks, or xtra currics, while students in the top 10 of my class are having difficulty even getting into columbia college (not including engineering - eng is easier to get into). one of those three friends who's going to be attending stern this fall, had originally wanted to apply ED to columbia but decided that he would have no chance and decided on stern. columbia has a much lower acceptance rate of about 10% and thats 10% of a VERY strong applicant pool. Stern has a strong applicant pool also but naturally only kids who want to go into business will apply there. and columbia's reputation is DEF not going downwards like some of you claim it to be. also, people on this board also say columbia kids are anti-social or w/e and that is completely untrue. my cousin goes to columbia and i've visited him numerous times and the kids I see there are extremely outgoing and nice. I am not trying to say nyu is a bad school b/c it's a great school; i will be attending nyu in the fall. but im just trying to state the facts about columbia.

To the OP: if you havent done this already, post this topic on the columbia board/general forum and see what answers you get. obviously most of the answers you get from the nyu board will be in favor of nyu.

gandalf, columbia's location is in my opinion better cause its nice and calm but only about 10-15min (if u get express) from downtown....

my personal rant about nyu was their admitted student day things was really crappy, one hour talk and tour seems like a factory one group after another.. they made no effort to impress it was like " hi we're nyu we are a good school this our buildings were in ny so come here ..see ya .. bye" and also they seems to be a non official hierarchy among the schools there : stern is the crown jewel, cas is junk you can transfer "down" but not "up" etc...

to OP, i vould vote columbia , but u really need to go check out both and get a feel and then the choice should be obvious.... ud betta start running u have 2 days left lol

"99.9% of the kids at Stern did not get into the Ivys, so are going to Stern by default."

Should I even bother to respond to this garbage? I turned down Columbia, just like half my class did for Stern. lol.

10 kids in our HS got into Stern, 8 of them with merit $$ offers, and not even 1 is going there.

Well I did say it was my opinion. 8-) I thought the area around Columbia was pretty crappy where that around NYU was not (i.e. I thought it was great) but, again, that was my opinion. It's the difference between NYU's urban campus (my preference) versus Columbia's more traditional campus.

I think Stern is a pipeline and feeder school to Wall Street. That's definitely a positive to that school. But, yes, I think the academic reputation of Columbia is better across the board.

"columbia's location is in my opinion better"

Whoever said this is on something or never been to Harlem. Columbia is in a crappy area, no question there. NYU's location destroys Columbia's.

"10 kids in our HS got into Stern, 8 of them with merit $$ offers, and not even 1 is going there."

So whats your point? You are basing an entire claim off of 8 people? Seriously, for an adult who has (presumably) been out of college for a long time, you say some pretty irrational and immature things.

columbia's location really isnt all that bad. as long as you don't go north of columbia the area is not bad at all. everything south of columbia is fine. and of course some ppl like the fact that columbia has a "campus", although its not very big.
