NYU or Cornell

NYU has always been my dream school. I applied to Cornell for ****s and Giggles and I am surprised I got in. Needless to say it is a big game changer. I have an EFC of 0, so I will def get more aid in Cornell than in NYU. Except I don't know what to do. When I told my mom i got into cornell she said "No, u wanted nyu and u got in, its not time to change your mind" WTH kinda answer is that...she didn't even look happy, she was all indifferent. She also said it was too far and whatnot, I am an only child and I can understand why she wouldn't want me to leave. Anyways, I need help, advice, anything, please help!!!

Come on, be real.

what do u mean be real?

Honestly, I don’t think anyone should apply to a college for “giggles.” To me, this is kind of offensive, because it is like someone who doesn’t really care taking the place of someone who really loved Cornell but didn’t get in because someone like you took his/her spot. Obviously, you put time and money into the Cornell app, so it did mean SOMETHING to you at some point in time. It all comes down to how much NYU means to you. If it is your dream school and you can absolutely picture yourself being successful at NYU and beyond, then go there. It seems unclear to me whether or not your mom will be paying for NYU, seeing as how she doesn’t seem to care about the debt that comes along with NYU. However, if it was going to me burdened with student loans, I would seriously weigh my options IF I truly cared about Cornell. If you are just going to Cornell for the sake of it being an Ivy League school, you are not going to be happy there. Have you visited Cornell and researched enough about it? Please, seriously consider your options. No one here can seriously know enough about you to tell you what to do.

I also got into NYU, which is among the top 5 most expensive schools in the U.S. Although it’s amazing, I am going to carefully explore all my financial aid packages before selecting.

Good luck.

it is a simple decision. If NYU is really your “dream school” then go there. But if, like many people, the prestige of the Ivy League is that important to you then go to Cornell.

thank you jerseygirl91, I didn’t mean it to be offensive. I should really rephrase that; I applied without hope meaning didn’t think i had a chance. And I don’t get my mom’s attitude either but that was just me ranting my bad

BTW does the Cornell financial aid include room and board, also I just read they don’t offer loans to lowincome families anymore, does that mean I will only get grats and work and study?

If your EFC really is 0, you’re not going to pay anything for the entire cost of attendance (which includes tuition, room and board, books, and personal expenses) except for a summer contribution of $2370 (which you can work over the summer to cover or take out a federal need based loan–I think you can use a subsidized Stafford loan) and a work study job. I wouldn’t listen to your mother on this one. Unless she wants to pay or take out the loans for you, this isn’t her decision.

Seriously, even with NYU’s help (they average about 60% non-loan help of need) your looking at 22,000 a year or 88,000 for four that your going to have to come up with.

What Cornell school did you apply to, btw?

If I remember correctly arts and sciences.

omg, i just found out i need to fill out this css profile cries This is impossible, my parents don’t understand it and cant help, and it soooooo late…OMG what do I do now!!!

Calm Down, and try to go through it, one day or two will not make a huge difference.

but it says that it was due on JAN 05 or something like, ureally think it wont make a difference, I mean its all electronic right… aren’t they suppossed to ship out the fin aid stuff on April 1st, should I give them a call tomorrow and explain my situation cuz there is also the matter of the noncustodial parent( Mine ran off I have no contact whatssoever how am i supose to answer to that section) :(

If you go online it does say they accept the Financial aid late, but you may not receive your financial package until later too. I don’t know what their policy is on a couple of months late, but just figured your this late so a day or too will not be that significant.

You’ll need a non-custodial parent waiver, if you look under their forms you can find it. It helps to have a third party (non-related) confirm with a signature that you haven’t had contact with this person in X years. It doesn’t have to be long, my councilor wrote a single sentence on letter head and signed it, and it was approved. Also, if you applied to anyone else who requires the CSS Profile, you’ll have to do the same so get a few copies from that third party.

Defiantly try to send it electronically, since it is faster.

kawaiicookie, might I ask when you received your admission decision to Cornell? The CAS is NOT a rolling admission school, so it’s highly unlikely you would have heard from them before April 1st. Are you sure it was the CAS you applied to?

Also, if you didn’t fill out the CSS Profile yet, call the Financial Aid Office before you fill it out for no reason. Maybe they have some sort of alternative.

■■■■■…

yea CAS comes out April 1st, so how could you have heard already? And regarding your financial aid, just fill it up as soon as possible and send it right away. . It has similar questions to the FAFSA.
