Alright so I've been accepted to both already. I got into the Writing Seminars program at JHU which is the second best creative writing program in the country. I was certain I would not be admitted to JHU, in fact, I was almost 100% sure I would be attending NYU's CAS for English in the fall until I got the acceptance email from JHU last week.

Although both schools are pretty stellar, I feel like I would fit in more with the student body at NYU in terms of personal interests and personality. At the same time, the program at JHU is quite amazing (not saying NYU's isn't) so I feel like I'd be insane to turn it down.

Other factors to consider: I am an NYU legacy. Both schools gave me the same amount of aid.

So which school should I attend? Should I try speaking with both to see if I can haggle down my tuition to change my mind (if that is even possible)?

JHU’s program is really amazing. and our english department is pretty good, but i’ve heard great things about JHU’s. have you visited both?

there’s always coming to NYU to take a class over the summer. some schools will let you take classes at other universities for credit at the home university. you could come for a summer and be an NYUer for a few months.

congrats!

You would be seriously missing out if you picked NYU CAS over Johns Hopkins. You didn’t think you’d get in, but you did! If I were you, I’d definitely pick Johns Hopkins any day. Especially since the writing program is so good.

Well, I visited NYU in the summer but the tour was filled with tourists and students who are not even in high school yet, so I am hoping the admitted students day will be better because I loved everything else about that school. I have yet to visit JHU since, again, I was certain I would not get in. So I did not want to build my hopes up.

@ missamericanpie: Do you know if JHU’s undergraduate program is as prestigious as its graduate? I know that your writing ability is the main factor in job placement once one has graduated, but can both NYU’s CAS and JHU’s program be safely uttered in the same breath?

@vone

the only reason i ask is because i was at JHU for two summers in a row for summer courses, and i didn’t like the feel of the campus, which was a big turn-off to me. JHU waived the application fee and really wanted me to apply and i didn’t. i would definitely visit.

i don’t know anything about JHU’s grad program, sorry. creative writing programs vary from grad program to grad program. a school’s graduate program prestige is ENTIRELY independent from it’s undergrad prestige.

Alright, I just asked because I know it’s grad program is very prestigious and I was just wanted to know if it’s undergrad was of similar caliber. Based on your response, I am going to infer that it is?

But yeah I am just nervous that I will not fit in. I was getting very excited to live in the heart of NYC. We’ll see how the visits go. Thanks so much! Any other comments are definately appreciated

JHU is a hellhole. don’t go. Baltimore is like Detroit now and their creative writing program isn’t as great as people say it is… besides NY is much more of an inspiration than the baltimore slums.

obnoxious1: Are you currently enrolled in either school? If so, what for? What creative writing programs are better then?

Thanks for responding :)

@vone

read the last line of my reply. grad prestige is independent from undergrad prestige. check the rankings, because i’m honestly not sure. i’m a media major at NYU, an entirely different field.

im not currently enrolled in either school but i have visited NYU and have spoken to someone who actually majored in creative writing at hopkins ( i was going to go there)… yeah… JHU didn’t seem that wonderful. i guess it depends on what you’re looking for… i was going to apply to oxford (england) as an English major because im writing a book and need that kind of environment- lol- but as far as the things that shouldn’t really matter go… (like the city and the type of students) JHU sucks.

but from what i got from speaking to people who went there…
NYU’s program may not be as prestigious as JHU’s or even as “good”- but the fact that your at JHU… in BALTIMORE… basically outweighs the good. JHU is really oppressive and so is living around a bunch of cut throat pre-meds… but their undergrad program is really top notch.

but i was under the impression that writers care more about their environment and avenues of inspiration than the prestige of their school …
if you’re on of those… go for NYU- but this again is from a writer who takes the above point of view… if you want the better program independent of how you’ll actually come out of it… JHU is probably better.

Thanks obnoxious1! Yeah, I have never actually visited JHU so I will have to see. I love NYU but I don’t want to miss the opportunity at JHU.

oh one last question: Where do you go to school now obnoxious1? Or have you already graduated?

why would you assume that im not in high school- LOL
im in the same boat as you- applying to college- i happen to know a lot of grad students because of the amount of biomedical research i’ve done with post docs and grad students… a lot of them changed majors a lot of times- and i talked to A LOT of ppl at JHU when i wanted to apply there. so… basically “i get around” lol- and i talk to a lot of people… especially at oxford… i talked to A LOT of writers at Oxford.

Hah–well I didn’t want to offend you and straight up ask you if you were still in high school. I just wanted to know where you were getting your sources. Thanks!

lol- not pulling anything out of my rear end…
i was just once in the same position… and when people at hopkins talked about the environment… it didn’t seem that terrific. i know for a fact that the program is very well known- if well known is what you care about…lol
what are you looking for? just wondering… do you want to be a novelist?

Von
just wanted to add my 2 cents. My D was accepted to both NYU and JHU last year. Not for creative writing, but none the less, JHU gave her way more money and I was hoping that she would go there. We visited during the accepted students orientation and the feel was just not right. We were there on a school day and the campus was so hushed and all the students were quiet, preppy and bland. Definitly not my daughters type of people. She is the creative, alternative type and NYU was more of a fit. You really should visit because she knew right away that JHU was not for her. The campus is beautiful and stately. They seem to pay attention to details and if you want sports and a quad, then JHU may be for you. I understand that their creative writing program is one of the best, however on the flip side, NYU may offer you better internship opportunities in your field.
Anyway, my D is happy with her decision to be at NYU.
Best of luck to you.

milk–What school is your child in at NYU now and under what major? I am really glad I am not alone in thinking this way.

Daughter is in CAS, pre med, undeclared major, but just lately she is thinking of dropping pre med and doing something more in line with the humanities. She actually likes her writing workshops/classes and languagecclasses and you should checkout the Morse Academic Plan if you are planning to go to NYU CAS.

Thanks milkandsugar!
