NYU or maybe even Columbia - 3.3UW/4.3W plus perfect SAT and ACT

Hello,

Due to personal & family reasons, my freshman year was not a very pretty year. I had a 1.6 GPA that year. However in my sophomore and junior year, I have significantly improved my grades and brought it towards a decent 3.7/3.8 average. This is all unweighted. I have took various honors courses in all fields as well as took AP's senior year.

Overall my ending GPA will be in the low-mid 3's. Will my upwards trend be enough to get into NYU or maybe even Columbia considering that I have some killer extra-curriculars.

It is also very important to mention that I have a perfect SAT and ACT score taking these exams on the FIRST try. I have studied very hard over the summers and gone over my schoolwork.

Some extra curricular activities I have are:
Computer Building (I build and sell computers for the school and I am the President of the Computer Engineering Club. All proceeds go to the Red Cross Foundation.)

Music (I sing, play guitar, bass, synthesizer, and tour around the towns nearby for gigs. I've won awards in talent shows and placed in competitions. I also do live and professional recording as a hobby.)

I have a lot of work experience considering the fact that I buy and sell actively in the stock market under my father's name. I have also worked since I was 6 at my family's restaurants and today I manage all three of them. (Hiring, firing, finance, taxes, inventory, design & decor, service, etc.)

I've played 3 years of tennis (played in a private team), 3 years off soccer (one year on the school varsity team, rest on private teams for my township), as well as ran track for a year (in school).

I hope this is sufficient information to enable readers to grant me some valuable information on what is the best thing I could do. Thank you for taking the time out of your day just to read my post. :)

Have you run the net price calculators?
I think you’re in the running for NYU (no certainty since it’s a highly selective school but not out of reach) but I don’t think your odds are good for Columbia. You can always apply “just to see”, but start with your two safeties (SUNY’s? CUNY’s?) and remember that to categorize a school as a safety, you must like the school and be able to afford it!

I think NYU is a match, but Columbia is a reach. Even your EC’s are nothing special for Columbia, and a 3.7/3.8 is also nothing special. Perfect scores on the ACT and SAT is amazing, but at the same time, “various honors plus AP’s senior year” doesn’t sound like that rigorous a schedule.

Chance back
<a href=“Chance me for UVA, Duke, and others. WILL CHANCE BACK! - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1649766-chance-me-for-uva-duke-and-others-will-chance-back-p1.html</a></p>

I agree with the above posters. NYU loves those high stats. Columbia does not even acknowledge them. A student will get the same internal “score” when being apprised by them for a perfect test score as they would if were in the top range but not perfect. That’s how a lot of schools assess test scores.

However, your upward climb is very impressive and you should note that. It is something that would give me a pause and reconsideration . Though whether it’s enough for Ivy or other most selective school consideration is not certain it is remarkable. Do tell your GC to high light this as it is a big deal and could be a game changer.
Congratulations on your score.

I think you are in at NYU. I know somebody who works in their admissions office, and they actively sort through applicants based on test scores. Your perfect score is quite beyond their average accepted range.

But I agree, you have very mediocre stats for Columbia. A perfect score definitely will not compensate for average ECs, which you seem to suffer from.

Just my opinion, but a guy who has a 3.8 in their sophomore & junior year, who has perfect SAT and ACT scores (and taken only once!), plays three instruments, builds computers for his school, and runs 3 restaurants…well, that fellow doesn’t have “very mediocre stats.” OP, please come back here in 10 months so I can congratulate on your acceptance to NYU and Columbia.

@SouthernHope…I greatly agree with you.@TheWealth congrats your stats are amazing…

Take SAT II’s in the subjects you did poorly in freshman year. Columbia is extremely selective, and I doubt you’ll get in. Everyone who applies has awesome scores, excellent grades, EC’s, etc. NYU uses test scores more than Columbia, however. NYU seems much more likely than Columbia because the focus is on numbers, whereas Columbia is more focused on a well rounded high school career, etc. I would apply to some safety schools, but I think you have a great shot at NYU  congratulations on your phenomenal scores!!
