I was accepted into NYU for photo and imaging at Tisch. I will have to take out around 150,000 and federal loans. However, I put in an application for Mason Gross at Rutgers and I am confident I will get accepted there, maybe with a scholarship. NYU has an amazing program for me because I want to become a photojournalist. However, Rutgers is substantially more affordable. Although, they do not have a strictly photojournalism degree/program.
The cost of half a small house?
Nah, don’t do it. Go to Rutgers.
The only time you will need to mention what school you went to will be for about 2 minutes when you first job will ask you what clubs did you join. You will never talk about your college ever again.
The education at Rutgers for that field is fine.
Going to NYU, however, might open doors for me in the job industry that Rutgers cannot. Could lead to better connections.
“I will have to take out around 150,000 and federal loans.”
$150,000 !!??
Forget it. This is WAY too much. Remove the leading “1”, and it is still too much.
school at Rutgers. Hop the train to intern in NYC
you could always negotiate for a little bit more $$$ to attend.
Go to NYU, it has better rep overall. And be aware that you will spend your next four years in college, you don’t want those four years to be boring af.
Game Plan is simple and straightforward: call NYU, ask them if they can guarantee a job offer after 4 years in a written. agreement, as long as you pay off that amount. Then NYU, otherwise, Rutgers. Happy life in NYU worth that amount, I do not buy it.
150,000? Dollars?
Find a friend with a spreadsheet and run numbers on monthly budgets with those kind of debt payments. Build it from the bottom up, tally your expenses including vacation money and saving for retirement funds. Then figure out how much you’ll have to earn to lead the life you have planned. Don’t forget taxes (FICA!) and rainy day money - cars break down and sneakers wear out. Then do the same thing without the loan payments.
Enjoy Rutgers.
Congratulations on your acceptance. Don’t assume you are going to automatically be accepted at Mason Gross. It’s Rutgers most selective school with only around a 20% acceptance rate. Syracuse and Rochester Institute of Technology also have dedicated Photojournalism majors. I don’t think it’s too late to apply. Both expensive but maybe they will offer you more scholarship money? You have until May to decide, plenty of time to pound the pavement looking for more scholarship money sources. For instance, did you submit a Portfolio to the Scholastic art competition? A gold key could net you a $10,000 scholarship. A good financial aid package from one school can be used as leverage to get a better package from your top choice school.
I decided on attending Mason Gross, got my full tuition covered by FAFSA. Thank you!
Good for you! Congratulations.
Excellent!
My D also got into Mason Gross with a portfolio scholarship. Will probably end up at Tyler School of art, which, after scholarship will cost just about the same as Mason Gross.
