NYU or Stony Brook - Computer Science

Hi, I have a question,

Which college is better for Computer Science. NYU or Stony Brook?

Thanks & Regards

Stony brook has one of the greatest computer science programs at the undergraduate level.

"In a Gourman report (10th Edition), Stony Brook’s undergraduate Computer Science program was ranked 15th nationwide and 2nd in New York State. "

at the graduate level it is ranked

“In some of the overall rankings, the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University has been ranked 31st by U.S.News & World Report (2010), and the GRE Guide ranked us as the 29th best.”

As a undergraduate computer science student about to graduate i can tell you that the program should be as good or better than in NYU even though i havent looked at the ranks of NYU. You surely wont make a mistake if you come here for CSE.

hmm, so for undergrad its not a bad pick also considering how cheap it is compared to private colleges.

Thanks CollegeKid90!

Any one else there for an advice…?

Unless you have money to burn, go to Stony Brook. NYU is notorious for poor financial aid.

Stony Brook has one of the most outstanding computer science programs out there. It’s surely the better choice of the two.

well, do the students who finish their undergrad from stony go to top grad school specifically ivys; also do companies like Google and Microsoft come to Stony for recruitment programs, because I know they do recruit a lot from the Ivys.

Ivy league schools will certainly have better recruitment than Stony Brook. But, NYU is not an ivy league school.

Going on towards postgraduate education depends upon performance in terms of academics and extracurriculars, not what school you attended for undergrad. There’s folks in ivy league graduate programs who came from virtually unknown undergrad schools, but studied hard to be eligible for admission.

I dont know anything about the computer science program here but i can confirm that Google and Microsoft both recruit at stony brook for IT/Software Engineering/Computer Engineering etc. There is also a Microsoft office nearby, within 15 miles.

I had computer science mates that have graduated and went on to top companies like google. You will not regret CSE at Stony Brook. Great program. Great faculty. Our faculty is from top schools like Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Illionis-Urbana, OhioState, PennState. I was looking at our great faculty list and i was impressed!

One more cool trivia: The president of Stanford University-- the top Computer science program in the US, is a graduate with a M.S and Ph.D from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in Computer Science.

John L. Hennessy

Thanks Malishka31 & CollegeKid90. Your feedback was really helpful and on spot! I am considering myself to apply to stony for CS!

More feedback and facts are welcomed for my & everyone else’s guidance!

Thanks and Regards
