NYU or UCLA

This is for Arts and Sciences, undeclared major, but looking at Economics and English, kinda interested in double majoring too if that's possible.

Cost isnt an issue cuz I'm out of state for UCLA

Which do you think would be better? Reputation, environment... I'm also finding it very hard to get any pictures of the NYU campus...though I think UCLA does look very nice. Anyone have any advice?

Thanks in advance.

NYU doesn't really have a campus - most pictures you'll see are of Washington Square Park.

If you want to study English, I would go with UCLA for sure.

If you want to study Economics, it's a harder decision, because econ at CAS is ranked in the top 10 and more recruiters are starting to recognize it. Plus you'll be in NYC, which is obviously a good place to study economics. UCLA econ is also very good, and overall I think it's a better school. Name isn't really an issue here because both schools have good reputations, but if you could give some more information about want you want to do afterwards (law, business, etc.) I could give you some better advice.

i did my research on both ALOT, and definately NYU!.. especially if ur plannin on doing a business major like economics

How much are you going to spend on your education of the next 4 years?

And how much is it going to cost for you to take a trip to NYC and LA?

Think about it before you make your decision.

Well by out of state I mean reallyy out of state, I live in Hong Kong, so distance to either is round the same, as well as money. And LA and NYC are both large cities, and given that UCLA is in well Westwood, I don't think the cost of living will be that different either. What if I know I'm planning graduate study? Will that make a difference as to which institution I choose. I do tend to be the kinda person who performs as well as my peers, like I work hard in classes where all my friends are working hard, and not as well in classes that are more lax, so I'd want an environment with more dedicated driven people...

If you decide Econ,

I would DEFINATELY go to NYU! Business opportunities at NYU are great, there are internships you can do around Wall Street area if you want to build a fantastic resume for grad school.

Personally, I love the NYU campus a bit better than UCLA's because I feel like at UCLA, I'm stuck on a hill with many kids. I couldn't really get to places in/out of westwood without a bus.. not as thrilling as located at the heart of NYC.

Also, UCLA is a really math/science focused school public school.

I would decide on whether you prefer a public institution or a private one.

Hmmm...I see the problem on visiting - would take you at least a week to get to both places. So maybe I can help a little more.

While no two cities are quite the same, the NYU location in NYC is likely to be closer appearance wise to what you are familiar with in HK - it doesn't really have a 'campus' - if you walked down the street you might not even know (with the exception of maybe one of the buildings) that there was a campus or dorms there. There is a small park on one corner, and lots of small restaurant boutiques in the surrounding streets; Chinatown is walkable (a long walk, but walkable), if you want a home cooked meal.

UCLA, in contrast, has a beautiful campus and while you might have to take busses to get around, and one of the places you can go is the beach...while there are beaches in the general vicinity of NYC (Long Island, Jersey Shore), they are quite a distance away and not comparable to what you'd find in LA.

On the other hand, physical appearances can also be deceiving - while NYC has the air of a city like Hong Kong, the culture is very different. And the Asian / Chinese population is proportionally smaller, if that is important to you.

What you plan to study does make a big difference. As far as business or econ, either school will do you well (UCLA has a particularly strong accounting program, but NYUs is pretty good also). You should scan some of the other threads on this site for both schools to see their particular strengths.

You won't go wrong with either choice. Good luck

This was totally me last year. NYU vs. UCLA....back and forth for a couple weeks. Actually, I knew I wanted to go to NYU...money was the problem and UCLA "seemed" like a no-brainer--- good school, in-state tuition PLUS grants, etc etc....but I'm at NYU right now

also i'm from LA and Westwood is not really like NYC.
I would try to not really compare the reputation of schools or how prestigious each program is...because ultimately all undergrad education teaches the same things...I think its the kind of experience that you're looking for. Location is the biggie here as well as everything that goes with it...the weather, the culture, the atmosphere-- competitive, or not, etc
