I currently live in Texas and all of the California schools rejected me. So now, it's between NYU and the University of Kansas (KU).

I know it seems like a clear cut decision, but please read on.

Although NYU is twice the amount of KU, with all the scholarships NYU has given me, new york is only going to be about $8,000 more a year.

I've heard over and over again that NYU is not very friendly and it's really hard to make friends. I got just the opposite from visiting KU however. On the other hand though, the KU campus has NOTHING around it. There is ONE street where everyone hangs out, and that's pretty much it. So which one? The fun but cold impersonal city or the warm friendly KU campus that will probably get extremely old after freshmen year????

KU isnt bad but NYU is definately better as a school... depends on your major. i would have gone to syracuse over NYu because I like the enviornment so much, and that has one main street everyone hangs uot on as well, or so students there told me

I really doubt NYU is as bad as people say about making friends. You start out with several thousand other freshmen that typically don't know each other and you are guaranteed on-campus housing so you're always around other students.

In my opinion, these two schools are not comparable. What are your plans after undergrad? In any case, KU will not give you the same opportunities as NYU unless you just happen to be an amazingly motivated and successful person. Jobs? Hope you want to work in Kansas. Professional School? Hope you want to KU again.

Seriously, this would maybe be debatable if NYU was many thousands of dollars more, but if it's only 8k/year more than KU (a state university) that means they have given you substantial scholarships. Take advantage of it and live. NYC can't be beat and in this case, NYU can't be either.

I have so many friends here its absurd. Don't listen to most of the B.S. people write here. Its been nothing short of an amazing experience for me. I recognize a dozen people on my way to class and make contact with about a handful. Classes are great (a boring one every now and then). Can't complain. Like I said, many people on CC are a bit anti-social so weigh each person's opinion carefully.

Couldn't resist.

Anyway, if you're a friendly person, I really don't think you'll have any problems making friends at NYU. It might take a little more effort because there are more things competing for people's attentions, but isn't that better than not having anything else to do besides school? And think about it this way - it's probably better to transfer to KU after freshman year if you hate NYU rather than the other way around (both in terms of admissions, as well as financial aid...)
