Hi all, thanks for viewing, I am in a difficult dilemma here regarding my college choice!! please help!!
I have always been interested in math/physics/chemistry. I spent two years already at Boston College, majoring Math, Economics and minoring in Physics and Business.(overloaded a ton of courses)
Now I am debating over two offers, one is Engineering Science at University of Toronto. It is their most rigorous program. I like it for it’s more diverse environment and distance from home (About 15 min driving). I am also offered full scholarship there. Staying in Canada also helps me with citizenship application which will help me in applying to grad school in the US compared to my current Chinese citizen status. Major draw back is that I have to restart as freshman and spend four years there.
As for NYU, I have to pay full, although my parents are comfortable with paying. They don’t want the price to affect my decision. I applied and was admitted to CAS school and planning to major Econ, Math, minor CS and business management. I applied because my girlfriend is going to Columbia U this fall and we want to be closer (flushing). I also only need to study for another two years. Moreover, it’s easier to get internships in NYC.
Now engineering is of more interest of mine than my current pursuit of math and econ at BC and NYU, and the U of T program was my dream program since high school (but I missed the application deadline when I applied for colleges, stupid me). I have decided that I will go to grad school for a business degree (MBA or finance/financial engineering).
My goal is to become part of technology innovations that will make differences. By choosing engineering I might build a startup myself. By going to NYU and going pure math/business I might become sort of angel investor to such startups like my father, who also hopes me to inherit his interest.
I know these are hard to compare since they lead to vastly different paths. Thus for now I need some help on which choice will give me a better education, and is U of T worth the extra two years of time? (and maybe which lead to a more successful future?)
