NYU or USC?

Which would you pick and why?

USC because it has a real campus....unless you want to be in NYC.

I would pick USC. NYC looks amazing, but I hate that NYU is kind of scattered all over the city. With USC, you get the real college experience, and lots of school pride!

Each school is very unique, and you really need to pick a school that suits your academic and personal needs. I would choose USC because it is a match for me and because it offers unique academic programs that fit my interests and career goals.

What do you want to study?

TISCH & STERN > USC (except film is better at USC supposedly)
NYU OTHER COLLEGES < USC

academically speaking, IMO.

MANHATTAN [OR] SUNNY CAMPUS IN THE GHETTO

it depends upon your major and what you want; it is all about FIT.

good luck!

Comes down to what you'd like to study

Yea I'm wondering this too. USC and NYU are both pretty comfortable matches for me, so I expect to get in both of them(well, not 100% confident)

I visited both schools and to be honest neither lived up to my expectation. But USC was less disappointing than NYU. The area around NYU is ,even though very lively and has a great atmosphere, extremely dirty and looked kinda run down. I also don't understand why NYU students brag about having Washington Square as their "quad", it's the dirtiest and smelliest park I've ever seen. I'd never wanna be there and lying on the grass reading a book. The lack of campus also kinda took me by a shock. Also, I went clubbing/bar hopping when I visited and it was not even close to what I've experienced elsewhere and NYC supposedly has the "best" nightlife =/
But of course NYU still has its advantages of providing internships and such.

I visited USC right after I visited UCLA, and I was a little dissapointed too(but maybe the gloomy weather contributed to this haha). I personally thought USC's campus can be much better. It looked as if the school doesn't put much effort for campus maintenance considering USC is a pretty rich private school. But surrounding area didn't really bother that much actually, it's way over-exaggerated.

And then obviously it depends on what you want to study. For me, I want to study Econ/International Relations. I'm not sure about USC's econ program, could someone tell me about it? I looked on **************.com and there were 8 Econ majors reviewed for USC...and the reviews were TERRRIBLE. I think they gave 4.0's 5.0's for everything on a scale of 10. But that's not a very trust-worthy site...so hopefully those ratings aren't accurate.

As of now I have USC over NYU even though I want to study econ, and I know NYU has a very good econ program(but I just don't want to stay on the east coast). I think there was some NYU student earler in December who wanted to transfer to USC and listed out the pros and cons of each school...

I'm going to answer this one a personal preference basis. My first thing will be what am I going to study? I'd be doing Accounting at USC, which is top five for undergrad, and I'd probably do Accounting or Finance at NYU. Both programs would suffice, but the key for me is where I want to be after I graduate. I really like Southern California (and In N Out burgers are delicious), but I absolutely hate Los Angeles. In terms of recruiting, I would probably have to stay on the west coast, where USC's name carries more weight. While that is all and good, I'm an East Coast (the Right Coast) boy, and I love the East Coast lifestyle (I could do alright in Cali though). I would pick Stern and NYU because it's in NYC and because it would be easy to get a good job in NY if I work hard.

Here are some other factors that help USC:
USC Sports-The football team is incredible and going to watch the games would be unbelievable. Furthermore, the basketball team is pretty good too (although OJ Mayo is probably leaving after this year). I would really miss the Trojan spirit.
USC girls-This is self explanatory...I don't remember how good looking NYU girls are...I'm sure they're up there too.
Weather-I like the sun more than the cold

Going back to sports, for me it wouldn't be a total loss because NYU has a sick soccer team. I go to one of their rival schools right now, and I know how good they are and it would be awesome to watch them play. It would suck in that some of my good friends are on the soccer team at my university. It would still be fun.

So my decision would be NYU because of academics, a chance to live in NYC, Northeast culture, watching the Red Sox beat the Yankees in Yankees Stadium, and recruiting.

It's by no means an easy decision.

I was accepted into NYU's General Studies Program early, but declined for the chance to go to USC.

I really liked NYU, but GSP was not for me. I think ultimately if I get into USC I'll like it more anyway. :)

when i was a junior, i actually wanted to go to NYC and visited the campus before USC, but i ended up hating the campus and the atmosphere. I know being in the direct city sounds great, but it actuality it felt impersonal, dirty, less safe, and uninspiring. I would have never figured that out if i hadn't actually visited.

you're in a USC board, i would think we would all say USC

hahaha, not me, but as I said, I love the east coast culture. I really love USC though. I loved the architecture, I really loved the campus. It was really lively, but it was somewhat overcrowded at the time I visited (late summer, classes just started).

tumblweed, you say you thought NY was unsafe, but what about the area around USC? I know NYC is kind of big, cold, and feels dangerous, but I don't think the area around NYU is particularly bad. I guess it's about commonsense at both places really.

i do agree that the area around USC isn't really "safe", but USC itself has like..it's own safer USC bubble within the bad area, while NYU was kind of part the area... or at least thats how it felt

but i do agree. both are never completely safe and commonsense is always a must

I get what you are saying. USC has a campus whereas NYU has a bunch of building in the same area, but you have to walk in a public area to get from building to building.

i go to USC right now and picked it over NYU my other top choice for some really dumb reasons. i wanted to go to nyu since i was 14 and then gave it up because of the school spirit, football games, glamour, and weather associated with USC. uhh...biggest mistake of my life. i actually came across this post when i was looking for the thread on transferring to nyu in 2008, a process which i am actively partaking in. unfortunately i only had a 3.5 my first semester here and now i'm afraid that i won't get into nyu as a transfer when i could have just chosen it when i initially got in as a high school senior. that would be the icing on the cake of a very regretful year. all that said, i have to say most kids at USC love this school and did not pick it for the same stupid reasons i did. my suggestion is for any debating between these two to visit while school is in session and try to possibly even stay with someone at the schools for a night just to get a feel for it. in the end, don't be won over by dumb things like school spirit and weather unless those are extremely important to you. i'm from upstate ny and i gotta say, the constant sunshine here is very enjoyable but i would gladly deal with winter weather for the chance to be in nyc. also keep in mind that there isn't all that much to do around USC's campus unless youre in a frat or sorority. all the nice areas like westwood (where fucla is) and west hollywood are a decent distance away and public transportation is non-existent. don't come to LA without a car or a very good friend that has one. finally, you can find school spirit anywhere, even if you have to look for it more at certain schools. all i can suggest is don't rush into your decision, make it very carefully, and be sure of what you are doing.

as a native new yorker, i'd pick usc. although the nyu "campus" is scattered, it is in a very trendy environment. i'd go as far as to say that the village/soho are two of the best neighborhoods in manhattan.

nrochs, I'm sorry you're having such a terrible experience here at USC! I too was torn between USC and NYU; I guess it really depends on what you're "used" to. Are you going to re-apply to Stern? And if so, what major? I should warn you (you probably know this already, though) that unless you plan to major in finance, which is undoubtly Stern's strongest program, Stern essentially treats other majors (marketing, etc.) far worse. Something to think about, which is why I'm now here at USC Marshall instead of NYU Stern, even though I'm from NY too.

Regardless, best of luck to whatever you end up pursuing.

I was about to talk about how reading the NYU Forum, and about how little a community the school is, that I might actually choose USC because the accounting department at USC is awesome. Then I read nrochs post about the social life feeling empty because of frat life. Although I am in a frat at my current college, I don't want to be completely revolving around the greek system if I'm in LA. I don't really like LA either. Although reading diehldun's post, he/she makes some good points. Do you know how accounting is at NYU? I'm choosing between accounting and finance...I know Finance is the strongest, but with accounting I can eventually get a CPA whereas with finance...I can be a CFA...not really impressive.

idk if this changes anything but one of the reasons i ended up picking USC is because i wanted to major in communication and the annenberg school here is very reputable for that major. i kind of ignored nyu's comm program because it definitely isn't as well known but now that i am applying to transfer to nyu for next year i'm applying to transfer into steinhardt for the media, culture, and communication major. i eventually wanna get into advertising. i'm honestly a little hesitant because annenberg is so well known but i know most of the connections you make from USC are in the california area and i eventually want to live in nyc. anyways i don't think a degree from either university could look bad, they're both very well-known and respected.

sachmoney: the only thing i can suggest is visit both schools while they are in session if you can because that's when you'll get the best idea of the environment. good luck!

When I visited USC, I got the feel that campus was very lively, but it seemed a little overcrowded. I can't lie...I think that USC's location really sucks...and I personally absolutely hate LA. However, USC is an amazing school, and I would love to go there. However, NYU is in in New York, so it makes a hure difference.
