Hello everyone, it's one of these threads haha.

So I've gotten in both's school's regular college and intend to study Economics. I'm not really concerned about the social life because I know I will be happy at both places, but USC has the edge over NYU right now. However, my sister told me if I want to study econ/business, there's noway in the world I should pass up NYU over USC because of all the oppurtunities in NYC. I know USC prides itself on its exclusive alumni networking, so I am pretty confused about which school I should choose.

If some of you econ/biz majors could give me some opinions, I'd really appreciate it!!! Thanks!

Yea, I mean I don't really know what I want to do yet. I just like Econ.

I've always always always wanted to come to Socal, but NYC is just second to LA on my list of places I want to live in the States.

So would it be hard to find jobs in LA if I go to NYU(majoring in Econ, and again I don't really know what I want to do)? Or if I go to USC am I sort of limiting myself to Socal for job oppourtunities?

And yea that old thread talked a lot about music industry but still gave me some ideas. hopefully I can get the same answers here lol

Honestly, since both degrees carry a good deal of weight, you'll be fine in either situation. But there is obviously a stronger USC alumni network in LA and an NYU one in New York.

If I go to NYU, I know I will be fine in trying to find a job on the east coast, but would it be hard for me to find job oppurtunities on the west coast? And if I go to USC, would I be limiting myself to job oppurtunities only in Socal?

taiwanese: Congrats on USC!!! You didn't even post when you got in.....I don't think you can lose with either choice in terms of job positions; go where you will be happier for the next four years......!!

Oh I don't really know anything about dates and stuff but I just called my school's mailing dude and he said he thinks he saw a big package from USC and i know i'm the only one from my school who applied to usc this year.

I am in the exact position as you. I applied to both USC and NYU for economics...and I am an international (I'm assuming that you're an international because of your username) and haven't gotten decision letters YET...but if I were to get accepted into both of them, I'd still pick USC over NYU any day.

Since NYU is known more for business and finance than USC, I would think that the students there would be a lot more competitive than the students from USC (in terms of economics). Thus, when applying for jobs, it's much better to be top of the class from USC than average student at NYU.

I became interested in USC a lot because I read that in the 3rd or 4th year, students can become/recruited as interns from companies such as Merrill Lynch....which is a big big big company (if you're studying economics in terms of finance which is what I want to do). Chances at getting an internship spot are also increased because the percent of students studying economics at USC is a lot more smaller than the percent of econ students in NYU.

I would also pick USC because over the years, USC has climbed up the university rankings, whereas NYU has gone down....the admission rate of USC is higher than that of NYU (might be a meaningless point, but you have to remember that in a few years time, USC MIGHT be harder to get into than NYU..so graduating from there might be an advantage in 4 years).

Those are basically my reasons for why I would choose USC over NYU (just in economic studying sense). Obviously there are a lot more reasons such as LA has a great environment, USC has great school spirit (something NYU doesn't have), there is also a more school feel to USC and plus, who DOESN'T want to be part of the Trojan family! I hope that helped you a bit more in your decision.

BTW, IF you are an international, and you said your school counselor received a package from USC, I wanna know why you didn't receive a DHL email....because I'm wondering if ALL internationals receive DHL emails, or just a few?

One question : where do you get the idea that "in a few years time, USC MIGHT be harder to get into than NYU.." Is it possible? I hope you're right.

I thought USC IS harder to get into than NYU? haha I got into NYU but I hope I get into USC because I would take USC over NYU any day just for its sheer awesomeness. In terms of economics and things of that nature, I belive NYU is probably ahead of USC. NYU has one of the top econ departments and I hear USC is lagging in terms of econ. Also, NYU has one of the top math departments as well which is tied to econ in many ways. Just my take on it.

USC is harder to get into NYU. But NYU Stern is harder to get into that USC

Lynn you can get recruited for internships from big companies like Merrill Lynch from any top-ranked business school.

But i totally agree with you on the competitiveness part. Id much rather compete with USC students than those cut-throat, I'll-Kill-You-If-You-Beat-Me Wharton rejects

i am so glad i found this thread. prior to this ive been literally ripping my hair out. i am an international student and i wish to studay economics as well as psychology. i have been accepted into usc and nyu as well but i am also considering carnegie mellon and claremont mckenna.
Taiwaneseterrior - ur from philadelphia? would you know what is life like in pitsburgh?

im torn. i dunno where to go it’d be awesome if u guys could help me outt!
i am an international and would love not to have to spend crap loads of money on visiting.

I feel for you. I’m in the exact same situation. NYU or USC, and honestly I still haven’t made up my mind. I love both schools. However, for your specific major I can say that honestly NYU is the place to go. Wall Stree>anywhere else.

I am too, deciding between USC (annenberg, print journalism) and NYU ( steinhardt, media/culture/com.)

I want to eventually work as a an editor for a major magazine publication, but of course I know I have to start as a writer.

So my question is, which school would prepare me the best in terms of their respective programs, prestige, and will lead me to the best job opportunities?

^omgah I was accepted to USC for print journalism also! but I was accepted to NYU for LSP go figure?

My problem is that USC Annenberg is an amazingly well ranked journalism school, and I plan on applying to Columbia for grad school because they have the best journalism program in the country. I think that in both our cases USC is the better school, it’s just that NYC is a better city and I feel like I would regret not living in NYC.

In NYC business/finance circles, NYU is recognized, USC is not. (Maybe it will be in several years time, but not at present…it’s just getting there.) They think it is part of the UCs or South Carolina still. I live in a suburb filled with Wall Streeters, hedge funders, etc. and I’m an SC alum. No one knows what I am talking about unless it has Wharton, Columbia, NYU in it. And when you try to explain USC, they still think of it as a “fun-in-the-sun” place as opposed to hard work. On the other hand, in film/media circles, USC has terrific name recognition on both coasts and I would say NYU is the newcomer there.
