Hey guys! I'm pretty sure all of us know that NYU is an amazing school and you would need fantastic GPAs/SATs to be guaranteed admissions into it. But, on the other hand, I hear many people get in and they aren't that bright.

Low SATs/GPAs and no extracurriculars. But then when I log onto College Confidential, people complain on how they get rejected with like a 2200 SAT and a 3.8 GPA with other amazing extracurriculars. So, I want all of your opinions. yes . you. the one staring at my post right now. I want to know how you think about NYU. is it actually overrated? or is it just a crappy school.

People on College confidential make it seem very hard. but I hear people get in without lifting a finger. and guess what? they reject the offer, even though their transcripts suck with a 65 in freshmen global. SO TELL ME? THIS IS INSANE RIGHT?

But on a serious note, many people are attracted to NYU because it is a solid university in, well, New York City.
If that is important to you, then no, it isn’t overrated.
But you are correct in that while it is a very selective school, it isn’t as selective as some.
Some super-brilliant people will get in and some smart but less-super-brilliant will get in.
(Bo had a 780 math 730 verbal, for one case example.)

I think you already posted this gripe on another thread. As stated before, you have NO IDEA what all the components are of another student’s application. Are you just trying to make yourself feel better because you did not get in by repeatedly posting the same complaint? Are you just frustrated because someone you thought is less qualified than you are got in, then didn’t even decide to go there? NYU is neither the greatest school on the planet nor the crappiest one. For some students it will be a great fit, and for others it won’t. Some students will get in, and some won’t, and you are not on the admissions committee – so you will never know why no matter how many times you ask ou there.

All you can do is focus on YOUR applications, YOUR acceptances, and your own work. Stop worrying about someone else’s.

Apparently, NYU is overrated by students who attend despite the unwisely large amounts of debt required (it is known for poor financial aid and high student debt levels).

MathTeam: this reflects poorly on you. you’re annoyed b/c someone with seemingly low metrics was accepted – now you post several times how you think NYU stinks. Nice.

Well, I’m going to NYU, so I definitely don’t think it’s overrated!
As for the different levels of applicants–it’s a big school with many different sub-schools, each with their own criteria and different things they’re looking for. Also, GPA and SAT aren’t the only things that matter. Honestly, it seems like you’re just comparing yourself to a classmate (one who apparently had a 65 freshman year? that’s not necessarily going to ruin their chances if all other aspects of their application are up to par) and are a bitter reject, but convincing yourself that the school is awful isn’t the best way to go about moving on…
