NYU parent thread

Hi everyone, my daughter just started her freshman year at NYU, so far so good. While I am not an expert, if you have any questions that may need to be answered, I can share my insight. I am still learning as we go. I discovered the forum by accident in March 2008 when we were waiting for the dreaded acceptance/rejection letters. I wish I had discovered it sooner. I have learned so much not only from other students but parents as well. I will say that NYU was my daughter's dream school and she was on pins and needles til the decision came in April. Then the decision was"can we afford to do this?
I also ask that any NYU parent that has insight PLEASE post as well. Because it was people like you that answered so many of my questions and apprehensions. And as always you can search these threads for information.

Same situation, daughter just started her freshman year at NYU Gallatin, so far so good, not an expert, dream school, pins and needles, afford it? I will also be listening here for insight!

Two dorm problems so far, slow to be fixed: The window doesn't close (missing handle), so street noise is interrupting sleep. Her room ethernet port is inoperative, so she has to go downstairs for WiFi. She has turned in her "fixit" requests, no action at last report. How long do such things take? Posting here is as close to hovering as I'd like to get! :)

gee, same problem with my daughter's dorm, street noise, broken handle on window, slow to get it fixed. But my daughter is lovin it so far.

Chiming in here as another NYU parent of a freshmen. My D is in Tisch's drama dept in CAP21, which is the musical theater studio.

So far, the only snafoo has been that the schedule she printed out back when she registered online in (I think) June gave the wrong classroom for her writing class, so she was embarrassed when she found herself surrounded by Italian language students! 30 minutes later, the problem was resolved and she got into the right room.

Move in went incredibly smoothly considering the number of students moving into her dorm and so far, no problems with the room.

She is loving NYU.

Hi,
I am going to apply to colleges soon and am interested in this school as well. I was wondering if you could provide some high school stats about your sons and daughters so that I could access my chances of NYU.

Thank you and best of luck to all your children.

Almosthere,
D is in CAS premed/undecided italian/art history/enviromental science
I cannot post her stats, but she took all AP's bio, calculus, history, environmental science, chem. english, studio art , honor classes
honor society, lots of ec, community service, internship at aquarium, work experience, honor roll 4 yrs, science award, wellesley book award
you can look at the acceptance/rejection thread that is posted and look at the stats. This is done i believe every yr.

Question. on CC, when people say "my D" or "my S" are they referring to their son/daughter? Because that abbreviation has been confusing the hell out of me lol.

^yes, but I see DD or DH sometimes and not sure what that means.

Dear Daughter, Dear Husband. :)

Another NYU/Tisch parent joining this thread. My D is doing the same program as NotMamaRose's so I am not sure how much "extra" I actually can contribute :D, but our D's are in different dorms ;-). Ask away!

Oh okay, it all makes sense now.

And to the parents, I'm just wondering. How are you guys paying for all this? Are there specific loan companies you like, etc?

NYU parent of Cas sophomore here. He was in Rubin his first year and has been at Coral Towers since May (I paid for him to stay over the summer, he didn't take any classes, but worked 2 jobs). He's studying politics and history (although in HS he was most interested in math, but he's too much a people person to pursue a degree in that he says).

We're paying for this via a generous NYU scholarship, perkins and subsidized stafford loans and I'm paying my EFC (about 12K) out of savings. No plus or private loans. He obviously didn't get any Pell grant or other NY state aid since we are from PA.

We are paying with a CAS scholarship (12,500), Perkins, Stafford(subsidized), outside scholarships and savings. We are using Sallie Mae, but with much trepidation. My advice is to research before you go with a lender which I didn't do. I went with what seemed a popular choice and not much information. The student loan industry is laden with problems so research thoroughly. I may be switching lenders for next year.

We used Discover Student Loans - Apply online for college loans for the stafford loan this year. they did not withhold 1 or 2% as the lender we used last year was going to implement for this year. That put $90 back in my pocket (think cell phone bill for a month!) They are part of Discover Bank, the Discover CC company. No I don't work for them, just a satisfied customer. they also offer Plus and private loans that we are not using (from any source) this year.

It was very easy to call the NYU FA office to use this lender and they loan was paid out no problem.

^Thank you, good to know. Hopefully they won't change their offer for next year.

D is a vocal performance major in Steinhardt, with a musical theatre concentration. She is living in Weinstein. So far, all is good!

She is required to take a g'zillion classes for her major and is also taking Writing the Essay, an honors seminar in literacy analysis and a Steinhardt scholar's seminar which will be highlighted with a trip to Texas in January.

She has classes M to F from 9:30 to 4:30 (approximately) for a total of 18 credits. At least we are getting our money's worth in terms of sheer hours in class.

She is receiving $10K/year in merit aid for Musical talent from Steinhardt and another $1K/year in merit aid from a trustees scholarship. The plan is that my entire salary for the next 4 years goes towards tuition (plus money previously saved with the help of gifts from grandparents and a bat mitzvah gift fund.) Hopefully we can live off just my husband's salary for the next few years! No loans for now, but if we have to go to plan b......

D's stat's in short were SAT 1350, ACT 30, top 5% (97 + GPA with the most difficult courses available.) School president and founder /director of an acapella group. Many other leadership positions, too. Leads in school shows. Did MT summer program at Steinhardt which helped.

D was originally supposed to receive an academic merit scholarship from Steinhardt, but this year they were only awarded if there was financial need. Since this makes no sense, she was ultimatley awarded the talent award instead which is one of the few that is still truly merit based.

I'll be glad to answer any questions for those just starting the process!

sueinphilly,
Thanks for the link. Would you recommend checking into the Discover Student Loans for grad school?

vossron: Is your daughter in Hayden by any chance? I lived there last year and had my own share of problems. Those fixit requests, about 90% of the time, are taken care of within a week. If it's been a week, I'd suggest that she file one with the reception desk rather than the online one. Or file both ways.

No, she's in Third North. The ethernet port has been fixed; I'll suggest the reception desk for the still-broken window, thanks!

NYU's obviously a big school, so sometimes things fall through the cracks. She needs to keep bothering someone until she gets what she wants (in this case, fix the window).
