I’ve heard some pretty mixed things about the NYU party scene. As an upcoming class of 2019 student, I would like to know the reality. I’ve heard some people say that the only way to party is to have a fake ID and spend a ton of money at bars and clubs, while I’ve heard others say that people throw dorm parties in Third Northand Weinstein in addition to throwing parties in warehouses and rooftops. Could anyone please clarify what the NYU party scene is really like?
The thing about NYU is that there is not one party scene. People have the opportunity to do what they want in NYC and they do. There is no campus to stick to and students will have the opportunity to explore all of the city.
There are people who go to clubs and bars all over. And those clubs and bars can be very different depending on the location and crowd. Some could play techno music and some might have live indie type music. There are swanky rooftops and gritty hole in the wall bars. And you can choose to do both in a weekend. Plus there are restaurants and lots of shows, concerts and screenings.
I know from my d’s that there were dorm parties (big and small–some crammed with kids from a floor–some just a few friends getting together) and house parties, too. As more students leave campus housing in the upper grades, the radius of where these parties are tends to expand. D who is currently going to be a senior spends a lot of time in Brooklyn. She herself is still going to be in NYU housing, though. She will be moving into Senior House next week on 13th Street.
NYU allows you to meet all kinds of people and you may end up with several very diverse friend groups. For D, her groups are: her current roommates and other kids she met as a freshman in an Exploration floor in 3rd North. Another group is made up of students from her art program. She is friends with kids she went on a NYU Bronfman sponsored Birthright trip with. She has a group of friends that she made in her Freshman scholars program.
D will hang with all of these people doing different things. Her dorm room has also been a hangout during the week for various students during the day and evening.
