NYU Performance Opportunities

I hear many positive things about Tisch....the great training at the studios, the intimate class sizes, the connections made just being in NYC. However, I am having trouble getting a sense of performance opportunities. Are shows being staged through the individual studios? Or, does Tisch have auditioned productions? If so, with 400+ students at Tisch, how is this all managed? Or, do students just seek out their own performance opportunities in greater New York. So many questions!

There are a variety of opportunities to perform. I am going to put what I know about, and there probably are more. As you probably know, freshmen are not allowed to audition for anything and are required to crew a production.

The Drama Department has Tisch Stageworks, auditions open to all Drama students. There is a student organization called “GAP” which puts on a season.

The opportunities within the studios vary. Some studios put on shows with guaranteed casting (although not necessarily beyond ensemble) for the students in those studios. Two studios that I am pretty sure follow this are Meisner and New Studio on Broadway, and some of the others as well. In Advanced training, there are some studios kids audition into in which the goal of that class is learning and working together as a company towards a production (I’m pretty sure Classical and Advanced Strasberg and Playwrights have this).

Other studios also put on shows that they cast for – Playwrights Horizons has both faculty-run shows and student-directed shows (these account for quite a few opportunities and are open to students from across the studios). ETW puts on student-devised shows (not sure if it is only cast from within the studio or not).

I am sure there are other opportunities as well; this is just what I, as a parent of a current student, am aware of… I may not have all my info 100% correct, but the gist of it is that there are a variety of opportunities, and getting that knowledge from the Tisch website isn’t easy…
