What are the necessary placement exams that students will take during orientation? For me, I want to enter NYU with my academic options open to all majors in CAS. Thus, I'm not sure if I have to take this exam or that....like how bio majors have to take a bio placement exam.

I don’t think there is a bio placement exam. There are language exams, the calc exam, and the chem exam.

There are no really necessary placement tests, but some of the tests will allow you to place out of certain requirements or place into higher levels/honors sections of the classes. The quantitative reasoning test allows you to place out of having to take a quantitative reasoning class, but if you have a 4 or 5 in AP Calculus AB or BC or AP Statistics you would automatically place out of the requirement, so you wouldn’t have to take the test.

The calculus placement test is only for people who are planning on taking calculus, and it really only tests whether you are calculus-ready or not, it doesn’t get you out of any classes. The language exams can get you into a higher level class so you can complete your language requirement sooner, or if you do well enough, you can completely test out of your 4 semesters of a language. That being said, if you’re planning on starting a brand new language, you don’t have to take a placement test.

There are also placement tests for both chem and bio. You only need to take those tests if you’re interested in placing into the honors sections of each of the classes. For biology, you can also place into the honors section of Principles of Biology if you have a 4 or 5 on the AP bio test.

So really, there are no tests that you absolutely have to take, but some of them could be beneficial for knocking out some of the MAP requirements.
