Hello all incoming/transfer students. I am currently an undergraduate at the school of engineering and I would be happy to answer all of your questions. Please be patient with my answers as I don’t have a lot of time with all the work I have, haha (hint).
Anyways, to clear up well known confusion, I will say the following:
- YES, NYU Poly IS an NYU school. The merger occurred January 1st 2014. Before that, it was affiliated with NYU, but not technically an official part of it. It takes a while to get these things approved.
- ALL forms must be sent to NYU. This includes fafsa, CSS, your transcripts (if you don't use the online version in common app. I, myself, had to send them by mail, so don't make the mistake of sending them to poly like I did. They might forward it to the main campus, but I wouldn't try your luck).
- Yes, Poly is generally more generous with financial aid and scholarships, but I can see that changing due to NYU's ridiculous budget. It's partially their fault, but they do have a low endowment compared to other schools, so yeah.
- I personally LOVE the campus. Of course, it's not much when you compare it to Washington Square in its entirety, but if you think about it, Poly has the biggest campus compared to each school at NYU individually. It consists of one main building, a library, and two buildings adjacent to them with a couple of floors in each. It may not seem like a lot, but the floors are pretty huge, and due to the buildings being relatively new, all the components work properly. Moreover, across the street, there is a HUGE abandoned MTA building which will become part of NYU in the next few years. It will take a few years to renovate it, and make it all nice, but if you're willing to wait, there you go. Everybody at Poly is SO nice and although I don't hang around the main campus a lot, I feel like Poly's population is closer together.
- Yes, there are girls! LOL. Poly and engineering school in general typically have a bad reputation of a female population, but due to the Merger (most likely), more females are coming in. The population used to typically be a lot of Indian and Asian (no offense intended), but that has changed completely since I have come here.
- Yes, you have access to ALL nyu facilities. If you can't get in a building, it most likely means that you shouldn't be allowed to be there in the first place.
- Yes, you get an NYU email with NYU drive with unlimited storage. Yes, this thing seems unlimited. It says 10 terabytes, but as you fill it up by a certain amount, it increases the overall storage by that amount. And I doubt that you'll even use 10% of the overall storage.
- The workload here is tough. I am currently a freshmen going into sophomore year, and I have a 4.0, but I feel like that will drastically change, haha.
- As for the acceptance rate, it was very high before because everybody would drop out because of the stress and/or dissatisfaction with the school in general. Although I am not 100% sure what it is now, my friend spoke to the dean's office or whoever possesses the information, and he stated it was in the mid to upper 30s. Don't quote me on that, however.
- They do have a business type major called Business Tech Management if you're interested.
That’s all I can think of right now. Feel free to ask any questions. Overall, I’m glad with my decision to come here, and yes, I did apply to poly as my first choice. It has an AMAZING reputation, and it is among the top schools for return on investment (ROI).
If you found this thread helpful, please says thanks or give me a star (this is my first time using cc, so idk what the standard is). Either way, I appreciate the gratitude.
Some NYU websites say that the tuition for Poly is around $25,000 but on others it says that the tuition is $43,000 not including the $24,000 living expenses. Can you clarify which is it?
Hello AsimSatti. Thank you for your question. Haha, I WISH the tuition was 25,000. It is the latter, 43,000. And it is continually increasing. As for the living expenses, I’m not too sure, but if you were to add it up, you would be close to 60,000 (it says $59,190 on Albert for me, but that is tuition, books, transportation, room and board all combined) . I believe the 25,000 is per semester, but that seems a little bit too high. For me, it says around 21,000 per semester.
Sorry I forgot to press reply. My answer is above.
Let me just clarify. The new building are the ones with the couple of floors. The main building is old, but there have been renovation done. Particular the 2nd floor. Due to the main building being old, many of the outlets available in the classrooms do not work. Not sure if and when they’re going to fix it, but it’s not such a big deal. The library is “relatively” new, and accommodates several study areas. It is also the place where you’ll find your first year advisors, but you’ll learn that soon enough.
There is also another building I haven’t mentioned (Wunsch Hall), which is the church looking building. It is currently going under renovation (or at least they say it is, lol) so you can’t go inside. This building hasn’t been really used over the past years due to it being the oldest building on campus, but it is going to be renovated for admissions and administrative purposes. I honestly think it’s the most beautiful building in the region because it captures the essence of 19th century architecture.
Oh, and although you won’t be spending most of your time in the city, you can visit a place 15 minutes walking from poly called Brooklyn Bridge Park. It is simply STUNNING. You have the entire view of the NYC skyline, and you’re RIGHT under the Brooklyn bridge. You can also go to a spot in Brooklyn Bridge park where you are in between the Manhattan bridge (I think that’s what the bridge is called lol) and the Brooklyn Bridge. Is it truly a marvel to look at. Brooklyn gets a bad rep, but it’s honestly gorgeous if you go to the right places. If you actually saw this post on class of 2019 on Facebook, you can see what I’m talking about on my cover photo. I will not, however, release my Facebook link on here.
Just a small interjection, haha.
How is the housing in Brooklyn… The difference between Clarke and Othmer and which do you prefer why
I think Othmer is for freshmen and sophomores while clark is for juniors and seniors. And correct me if I am wrong but the Clark is not actually own by Poly right?
I went to Poly in the late 70s and early 80s. So much have changed with the school and the neighborhood. If any Poly students are interested in Greek life, there are fraternities that are on campus with houses in Brooklyn Heights.
The housing is tight (as in crowded). I’m a commuter, so I don’t know much, but I know that Othmer guarantees housing for the freshmen, and then after that, you have to get lucky. I have friends that dorm at Clark who are freshmen, so no, I don’t think it’s exclusively for upper-class men. Clark resides in this Hotel called “St. George Hotel” which I believe was quite famous back in the day. Anyways, it is shared by several schools in the area, so I believe that it is hard to find housing after freshmen year. I’m not too sure, however, and it might change. As for now, don’t worry about housing because you’re guaranteed a spot. Moreover, I believe that you’re allowed to dorm at the main campus (not 100% sure) so that can be an option as well. The campuses are around six trainstops from each other, so the trip is really short ~15 to 20 minutes. In addition to the train, there is a NYU bus that drives to each respective campuses at a set schedule. The schedule changes weekly I believe.
My last comment should answer your question. If not, ask again.
Hey man I totally agree with you about the campus. Aside from Starbucks, Chipotle there are brooklyn heights, the bridge park, DUMBO, and the subway station is literally right at the school.
This may sound silly, but why doesn’t Poly have the NYU flags hanging outside the buildings like all the rest of NYU schools do?The flag will not only enhance the campus’s exterior appearance (on which I think Poly is spending a fortune), it also creates a strong sense of unity (which is especially important for us Poly since we are away from the main campus), and it also creates a more motivating learning environment. I would love to see the NYU flags hanging outside the Jacob building along the Jay Street, the Dibner Library, and perhaps even Wunsch the next time I visit Poly! If the management level aren’t considering putting up the flags, would you guys make a suggestion to them to do so? Thanks.
acupofmocha,
There are flags hanging outside the school. If you look at dibner, it’s on the side and you can see the flags hanging inside the front entrance of Jacobs from outside. As for the “NYU-POLY” Sign on top of Jacobs (the old one), nobody knows when they’re going to change it, but I guarantee you that they will. I believe many people do make suggestions, however that doesn’t do much. Since it’s part of NYU then, it’s entirely up to them as to when they decide to do it.
If you go to one of the buildings with the couple of floors, notably 2 MetroTech, you will see the new logo plastered everywhere. So yeah.
There is also a flag hanging outside Wunsch. One can argue if they’re actually “flags,” but they are the closest thing to it. I can’t really explain how they look until you see them yourself. But don’t worry, there will be more integration as the year come.
AsimSatti,
I forgot to answer part of your question. While many argue that Othmer is better because it’s literally 10 seconds from poly and Clark is 15 minutes, I prefer Clark. One, because it has many schools so you can talk to others and experience other fields. Two, because it is like five minutes from Brooklyn Bridge Park. That is why I prefer it even though I don’t dorm.
Hey thanks for the reply. I have been to Poly campus several times because I live close in the Queens. Yeah I know what you are talking about, but I was thinking more of an actual flag.
Thanks anyways.
Ayy! Queens in the house, haha!
As I mentioned, don’t worry about it too much. I understand why you want the flags (to show everyone that poly is NYU), but that will come on due time. Just worry more about the education of the school then the aesthetics. They make changes every year, as evident with the renovation of the cafeteria, so it should only be a matter of time. Plus, if you want more nyu, just take a trip to Washington Square. There are flags everywhere, haha. And it’s closer to where you live!
Can you tell me your estimated expenses at poly so I can know what to expect
What do you mean by estimated expenses?
Hi @PolyEngineer Do you know anything about the 3+2 CAS+Poly Joint program? How do you apply from Poly?
