NYU Pre-Med Information

Any thoughts on this post? Seems legitimate but would love corroboration.

It’s more like a sales/marketing pitch (first post from this poster). NYU med school already attracts the top stats applicants (3.9+ GPA, close to 520 MCAT) before the free tuition thing.

Any private school does not offer generous financial aid with high COA, has huge pre-med science intro classes with fresh-PhD professors/TAs & harsh grading is not a good pre-med school. With the amount of tuition NYU charges, they should be able to offer “free one-to-one” tutoring to ANY pre-med student who needs help in pre-med science classes (Bio, Orgo, Biochem,…) then it will be a good pre-med school.

On the other hand, NYU does offer tour to their own med school which is greatly appreciated but that alone does not make it a good pre-med school.

There is no way any good med school will have some under the table deal. Especially a school like Harvard, if they have reserved seats for NYU, they could have deals with other schools, pretty soon they don’t have to open their admissions office and we all know that is totally untrue.

With its references to under the table “quotas” the only objective way to read that post is that it is complete fiction.

^^Right. Any kind of “quotas” are a violation of LCME accreditation standards. Since the LCME monitors med schools on an very regular basis (think annually or biennially) to see that the schools adhere to: 1)LCME rules and 2) the med school’s own statement of policy, any med school that holds seats for particular undergrads will get massively and publicly sanctioned PDQ.

Most top medical schools have similar profiles of students almost every year - 3-5 students from college A, 7 students from college B, 2 each from college C, D, E, F. They are distributing their seats across many schools but invariably the percentage of seats at top schools for specific undergrad schools look very similar each year, making the poster’s claim look somewhat credible statistically. In theory, it would make sense that top schools produce top students who get into other top medical schools. Michigan is good example. If one applied to them from Harvard, Yale, Stanford and actually make the interview, it seems almost impossible not to be admitted. Does it mean those schools are reciprocating in kind to Michigan? Absolutely not. However, they will admit some applicants from Michigan, because Michigan also will have some great students graduating from there.

The poster isn’t talking about statistics; he’s referring, repeatedly, to under the table “inofficial”(sic) quotas among “top” undergraduate colleges and medical schools(Harvard, Yale, and Stanford are mentioned along with NYU). He flatly states “NYU premeds are given special consideration to the top medical schools across the country” because of these “inofficial” quotas among the undergrad/medical schools.
Such quotas would not only be unethical, but as WOW points out would also violate LCME standards. These quotas would also arguably be illegal, and would be the sort of thing DOJ/DOE would find very interesting to explore, not to mention the AG of New York.
But since the post is total fiction, no worries on any of those fronts for the schools mentioned.
