Is a degree from NYU all that good? How would you compare it Rutgers University? I really don't like it here, and I'm considering transferring to Rutgers. I'm not too sure how I'm going to last the rest of this year, let alone four years here. Would a degree from here be much better than from Rutgers New Brunswick? Is it a sacrifice worth making?

Depends what you are majoring in. If you are a Finance major you will have a great amount of job opportunities but if on the other hand you are majoring in something such as Education or Biology you should transfer to save money.

Whether or not it’s worth it depends on how much you’re paying and for what degree. Rutgers is significantly cheaper so the job you get won’t need to be as high paying as the job you get after NYU.

Paying 30k for NYU. 24k for Rutgers.

I personally would stay however go to where you’re happy. That’s the most important factor.

I’m willing to sacrifice some happiness if this will help me in the long run. I’ll be majoring in chemistry most likely, and completing the pre-med track. Since med-school is competitive, would NYU give me a slight advantage over Rutgers?

Dude take the money and run. I’m guessing from your screen name that you’re a Pre-Med student. I’ve come to the realization while at NYU that if you have to take out loans, I wouldn’t advise coming here.

So the NYU name is not worth the cost? Granted, I’m not paying full price, but it’s still a hefty sum. I just need a reason for staying here. If someone can tell me definitively that I’ll have a better chance with a degree from here, then I’d have more of an incentive to get through 4 years here.

This depends on what your major is and if you know you’ll not change your major. If you’re pre-med, I think your GPA matters more than the school it came from (unless it’s from a super-hard school like MIT). You should ask on the pre-med forum. But if your major is something like math, a degree from Courant may be worth more than say a Brown math degree because Courant is universally known as a great math school.

It’s 6K in differences for NYU vs. Rutgers. That’s a small price to pay compared to the quality of the schools. While you are set on pre-med, remember that a TON of kids drop out of the pre-med track and change to something else. While this might not be your case, you never know what can happen. And so if you do decide to change to something else, a degree from NYU (with a good GPA) will be far more impressive than a degree from Rutgers.

If you are really unhappy at NYU, then you should consider transferring. Generally you do well at a place where you are happy. You have to consider the pros and cons and how you want to spend the next 4 yrs.

(1) For Pre-med, it does not matter where you go.
(2) Something like over half of all Pre-med students drop out of Pre-med.
(3) I believe only 24% of all applicants applying to med school actually get in.

If you’re going to stay Pre-med and know you will get into med school, it won’t matter where your undergraduate degree is from. If however, you might change your mind, etc. an NYU degree is more prestigious than a Rutgers degree.

Personally, I transferred out of Rutgers into NYU because I hated Rutgers. What about NYU do you not like? It appears as though it’s only… Your second week of class or something like that?
