Just got it from the "horse's mouth." No more reservations available for Floyd Collins. However, waitlist is created at the door. At least 5 seats available - held back for each performance - for persons who come early (he guessed an hour before) and get on waitlist. These in addition to persons not showing for their reserved seats. I just learned that Sat. night's performance is at 6. So...if you're in the area, stop by, but clearly iffy.

Anyone planning to audition for The fall mainstage production, Hair?

I'm pretty sure my D is going to want to audition for Hair. She has loved Hair for many years. I know how difficult it would be to get in the Mainstage show. She mentioned to me a while back with excitement when she heard which musical it was going to be. It is a fave. Is your son going to try out? When are auditions? My D has not mentioned it since way back when she heard the show choice, but I got the feeling back then that she was gonna want to audition for it.

Personally, I hope my d doesn't audition for it. I really don't care for it,and I'd rather her concentrate on studies and getting a paying job, lol! SHe might try out anyway, I can't stop her. But not my fav show (sorry, Susan!)

My s is certain to audition. He's hopeful that they'll need males who can dance. Plus, one of his instructors (who s regards as really smart and creative) is directing. S surprised me by saying that he respects this director so much that if he's not in the show he'll try to work on it in some capacity. He anticipates that this director (sorry, don't know his name) will do something interesting and different with the musical. but , rossji, I know what you mean about studies. I do wonder when they have time for that part of the experience.

RossJi....my daughter does have a job that pays money and it is on weekends and is flexible because she can accept or deny each particular job as it arises due to her schedule.

Yes, being associated with a show makes their schedule quite incredible. Right now, my D is out from the early AM until midnight every day because of Full Monty, plus rehearsals for her a capella group. She still is writing papers and everything. I finally got to talk to her. She squeezed me in. This weekend, the day before she needs to be at two dress rehearsals, she is traveling all the way to Brown to compete with her NYU group, The N'Harmonics, at the Quarterfinals. Then in the middle of this is trying to get a summer job. But it is good to be young!

According to her "away" messge, last night was the first run of the FULL Monty:o and so Hair is more of, um, THAT. Not only does my D LOVE Hair but she has been a long time "student" of the 60's....lotsa major studies/projects on this era, lotsa interest in it. My assumption is that being cast in a Mainstage show at Tisch will be difficult, however. Jasmom, I hope my D meets your multi-talented son one of these days. It would be fun if the CC moms' kids were in something together at school. RossJi's D and mine are now in Vocal Tech together. I hope she gets to meet AlwaysAMom's D sometime as well. Also, there are several CCer's coming to Tisch NEXT year.
Susan

Multi-talent seems plentiful throughout the MT threads. I figure that as long as s keeps learning, he's on the right track for him. Would be fun to learn that they've all met. Maybe someday they'll work in/on same production.

yeah! maybe i'll be hanging with them next year!

chris

I am so excited that Hair is the Mainstage musical. My D is going to audition, which really threw me for a loop as she has always made the statement: I don't want musicals, I'm into the straight drama." So much so, as many of you know, that when she had her musical theatre audition she told the auditor she preferred Strasberg because she had changed her mind with regard to CAP 21 and her parents had not been paying attention when the audition was set. (you can imagine, she was not happy with us for quite some time.) Luckily for her, the auditor gave her Strasberg.

In the meanwhile, however, this year she has been taking private voice and getting very positive response with regard to her singing from her Singing teacher at studio and the private voice teacher. I told her I'm flying in whether she gets a part or not and we will go together to see Hair if she's not on stage. I think it's gonna be so much fun to see. After reading Jasmom's post I'm sure it will be now based on the info regarding the director.

Soozievt, is your daughter actually in the production of Full Monty? I am somewhat confused as I thought she was a freshman, but maybe it's off campus. I will tell you that I don't always know what they are doing at NYU as daughter only tells me about certain plays that are up and running, or that she is auditioning for. I just wanted to mention the play to my daughter. and your daughter's involvement.

I know this week she has three auditions for three separate shows. She is very excited about them, so I am hopeful maybe something will work out for her. She has a great attitude, though; she says if she doesn't get a part, it's all good practice. They worked at auditioning Wednesday and today in class. I know she is feeling quite good about one of the auditions, but I never ask why, just let her do her thing.

Theatredivasmom

theatredivasmom,
You are quite right, of course, that Tisch freshmen may not try out for or be cast in theater productions. My daughter is playing keyboard piano for the GAP production of The Full Monty which is about to open in a couple of days. So, she is performing, but she is not ON stage! Hope that clears that up!

tdm,
How lovely that your daughter is developing (and getting such great feedback) in voice. We. too, will try to coordinate our Fall NYC visit to coincide with Hair. Good luck to your daughter on her auditions!

Jasmom,

Good luck to your son with his auditions, too.

Soozievt,

Thanks for clarifying for me; I often feel like I have no idea what is going on out there in NYC. I also thought it was possible, given all of the wonderful things I have heard others say with regard to your daughter's outstanding abilties, that maybe she was on stage. It sounds like she is having quite a wonderful 1st year at CAP.

Theatredivasmom (Kris),

No, no exceptions are made or should be made for freshmen to do shows. A situation like that had come up for my D this year at CAP but the policy needs to be upheld, as it should be. Thank you for being complimentary and I don't know who you may know who knows my D but I can tell you this, she is no different than the many talented students at Tisch (and others on this forum who do not attend this school). She has told me time and again that she is in awe of the other talented students she has met since going there. There are so many outstanding young people there (and in this field) and I am sure getting cast in a show will be no easy feat, so won't count on anything. Sorry for any disappointments your D had in the past week and it unfortunately goes with the territory. While nobody wants to go through that (nor a mom see their kid do so), she must remember that she is talented in that she got where she is now and mixed into several "no's", there will be "yes's" sure to come.

Yes, my daughter has loved CAP so far in every which way and everything else at NYU and in the city. No complaints! It has been a great year so far.

And since we have a sort of NYU "fan club" going on this thread, LOL....I'll share something from this past weekend that is a "Yay NYU moment". My daughter is in NYU's coed a capella group, the N'Harmonics. This past Saturday night, they competed in the Mid Atlantic Region QuarterFinals for the International Collegiate A Capella Association, amongst many other groups, that took place at Brown University (ironically my other D is a soph at Brown but unfortunately wasn't there as she had left the very same day for a week with her ski team to compete in Maine at the National Collegiate Ski Championships....and we were at Brown for this event). The N'Harmonics won first place! It was very exciting. The place was overflowing. The other groups were very good. The second place group is this great male group from Brown that I have seen before, the Jabberwocks. A song that my D had arranged was debuted at this concert and the girl who was the soloist for that song (and is the President of their group, though is not a Tisch student but is in CAS) won best soloist of the competition. It was so cool for her, if you had heard all the ones that evening. Their group got an encore at the end of the evening, in which my D solos at the end of the medley and the crowd rose and it was so exciting for NYU! Next, they compete at the Semi Finals at Fordham. The winner of that goes to the International Finals at Lincoln Center. My D loves being in this group and while she can't do musicals this year, this group has been another collaborative performance outlet. They have performed at NYU, Georgetown, Smith, Brown and CBGB's in the Village. The voices in the group are really good...some go to Tisch, but not all do. They are very different from the other groups, not as traditional and more "rock out". They seem to go over well with audiences. It was a fun event! That's all I get to see of my D this semester though ;-(.

Susan

Did any of your kids see Radiant Baby this weekend? It's a beautiful and moving show about Keith Haring, the acclaimed artist who died of AIDS. I believe Frank is choreographing and directing the show. The artists who wrote the book, music, and lyrics have been directly involved with this production, as is usually the case at Tisch. My D said it was beautifully done and she enjoyed it as much as the off-Broadway production we saw a few years ago. It's on again this week if any of your kids still want to catch it.

Just received the following info via email. These theatres are small and tix go extremely fast. For both Batboy and 4X4XRichard, you called in, and paid at the door.

Shy teenager Eleanor is mysteriously thrust into the Website World of her favorite comic book and becomes Milady, teen superhero, who must lead the Starmites, guardian angels of Innerspace, on their Quest to save the Galaxy. With the help of hip-hop heartthrob, Space Punk, Eleanor learns to own up to her inner power, defeating her foes and conquering evil. Told through a blend of contemporary musical styles, this new version of Starmites conjures up a fantastical world reminiscent of Spielberg and Tim Burton, with a touch of Tolkien, and J.K. Rowling.

Thanks for posting this info!

Spangley, I think I know who you are (have heard of you, I should say) through my daughter who is a freshman at CAP21. She is on crew for Starmites. Might you be in it and were you Bat Boy? And your little sister was in Jekyll with my daughter (played Lucy) last summer? If so, my D thinks you're amazingly talented and raved about your performance in Bat Boy. I guess she'll be seeing Starmites, or at least behind the scenes and building the sets. Break a leg if you are in the show! I don't wish to post my daughter's name but I think you can figure it out. She is from VT.

EDIT...well, I just reread the cast list and if you are who I think, you're not on it and so strike my question if you are IN the show. I see one of two people from my daughter's a capella group in it, however.

Spangley,
Thanks for the information. I won't be able to attend Starmites, but it was neat to see that one of my D's friends from H.S. is in the production. Kera is a sophomore from Cincinnati.

I'm going on April 1. My daughter is doing costumes (lol - she doesn't even sew buttons....hmmm...) If anyone from CC is going, maybe we can meet up!

RossJi, did she get to pick which crew job she has to do? My D is on crew with your D for Starmites! She only told me that they have to build sets. I presumed that was what they all do but I have no idea. Like your D, mine doesn't even sew buttons either, LOL! Let alone works a drill. Good times.
