NYU question

Hey guys! I plan on applying to NYU Stern early decision! 35 ACT, 3.61 GPA (I realize it's low, except I attend a very prestigious and challenging private school), and great ECs.

Anyways, I just got home from a summer program at NYU Steinhardt and fell in love with the place. I'm fairly certain I can get into the music business program at Steinhardt. The issue is, I don't want to major in music business.

I want to major in finance and would love to go to Stern, except I hear Stern is much harder to get into.

So a few questions.......

Am I better off applying to Steinhardt, get in, and then transfer to Stern, or just apply to Stern upfront?

Secondly, with early decision, I see that NYU allows you to choose a backup school in case you aren't admitted to the first school? Can someone please explain this to me and how it works? Would I be able to apply to Stern and put Steinhardt as an alternative if I don't get into Stern?

Thanks!

Whoops! I apologize if this is posted twice in this forum! I asked a different question on the Chances forum! Thanks!

Do not apply to a college you do not want to go to. What if you get into Steinhardt, and then cannot transfer into Stern? Then, you will have a degree you don’t want or need. Try to get into Stern. If you don’t, find somewhere else.
