NYU Questions about atmosphere

Hi guys,

I'm seriously considering applying to NYU ED. I visited the school this summer and I love the academics and location... but I have a few questions I was hoping to have answered by students:

1- What is the level of aid given by professors? Are there decent office hours for student help? I'm someone who has been tested for a mild learning disability, and although my needs do not extend beyond extra time on exams, I know I will most likely need to be able to get in touch with professors. Another thing: are professors open to kids with learning disabilities? I most certainly am not the stereotypical LD student; I maintain good grades, do homework, blah blah blah. I had an awful experience with my jr. year english teacher last year, she completely did not know how to help me and classified me as a "idiot." In these regards, what are the teachers like at NYU?

2- What is the typical NYU student like? I am a fairly un-liberal student, most probably going to be "moderate" when voting time comes around. (ie: not exactly conservative but more conservative than liberal) Are the majority of students the kind that like to plaster their fave. band posters and political concerns all over their dorms and wear punk rock t-shirts whenever possible? (stupid concern, I know, but this type of thing bothers me). I am not exactly a "prep," but am NOT "avant guarde". My hope is that since NYU is such a big school, there will be more than just one "typical" NYU student. Is this the case?

3- This is more of a minimal concern: I've heard that the CHOICES floors' residents don't always abide by the no alcohol, no smoking rule. Is this true? I don't smoke and don't plan to. I currently don't drink, but I'm sure everyone does at some point in college.... I just don't want to wake up to vomit in the hallway or the smell of a Jamaican greenhouse outside my door.

Any opinions would be highly appreciated.... it's a huge decision to apply ED and I want to make sure whatever I do is what I absolutely want. Thanks for reading and sorry for the long post!!!

I'm in CHOICES, and the floor is half-CHOICES, half-not. The non-choices kids do, but as far as I know, none of the choices kids do.

Yea, mehgan is in choices but she's a total boozer. It's really a cause for concern. INTERVENTION!!!

I'm a liberal hoping to go here, and most of the people I know applying are liberal, not radical liberals(the annoying ones), but not conservative. However, my cousin is a freshman this year and is a moderate/conservative and loves it so far(granted it's the first week).

This one really depends on the professor/TA, but I've found that most of them are pretty helpful and available during office hours or by appointment.

Most NYU kids probably do post up posters of their favorite band and wear punk rock tshirts, but I don't think that means they're "liberal." I think what you're really concerned about is whether they wear their politics on their sleeve - and no, the majority of them don't. And you're right, NYU is pretty diverse, so I don't think you need to believe any stereotypes of what a "typical" student would be.

Had a couple friends in Choices and there generally isn't a problem with drinking on those floors.

Thanks guys for your helpful comments. My question about kids with learning difference-- can anyone speak from experience about the attitude of your professors?

most kids wear polos, not punk tshirts.

word. maybe i'm with the wrong crowd, but there were actually more punkrock tshirt/poster kids at my high school than at nyu. most of what i see is either preppy or casual.

Thanks for the comments--- but I'm still concerned about the amount of aid given by teachers. (I have no idea how I linked liberal politics with punk tees.... but I think it has something to do with how the ultaulta liberals dress at my high school-- minimal concern.) Can anyone speak from experience about the teachers? Also: the learning center. Is it as helpful as the tour guides and the nyu website made it sound? Are tutoring sessions for writing/math/etc. free? Are the tutors accessible and skilled? Thanks again!

Hey windylane...

Your question about the professors was probably one of the biggest concerns I had before coming to NYU myself. Being an International student, I come from different educational system.

So far, all of my professors are very reachable and will respond to all of my questions. Also, NYU has a lot of resources for students with learning disabilities. If you ever feel you might need accomodation for anything, let your professor know beforehand (this meaning not the day before the test!)
