NYU right for me?

Some confusion..

I am a senior at a competitive public school in MetroWest Boston. I want to major in something along the lines of graphic design/multimedia & communications. For a long time I was planning on going to a stand alone art school but recently I decided I'd rather attend a large university with a strong art program, and NYU seems like that school.

Now I haven't done a terrible amount of research yet =/, but would it be more appropriate to apply to Tisch or GSP if I'm sure multimedia/communications, etc is what I want to pursue a career in? Would my chances vary depending on the school?

Also, I'm not terribly sure about my chances of getting in in the first place, and I hope you guys can help me out! =D

My grades aren't terribly impressive, but I've got plenty of extracurriculars. I have a GPA of 3.5 due to a bout of depression freshman year =/ but it jumped from a 2.0 to a 3.9 from 9th to 10th grade. I've taken/am taking 4 AP classes and scored a 4 on US History last year. I'm Comptia A+ certified in computer hardware and software through a rigorious course at school. I'm in Honors Art Portfolio this year. They unfortunately don't offer many art courses at my school, so I'm also taking Honors Art History online.

I've been part of the Business Professionals of America for 2 years and placed 2nd for website development at the State competition both years (qualifying for Nationals). I plan on continuing the tradition this year ;D. I'm on the Academic Decathlon team, and I'm also an avid member of Students for Planet Earth and the school paper (writer and layout design).

I scored a 2030 on the SAT (m: 640 cr: 690 writing: 700) and am retaking next month. For SAT II's, scored a 720 in US History and a 520 (ouch!!) in math 1, retaking the latter.

I guess my advantage over some could be that I have a focus, and I've done what I could to prepare throughout my highschool career. I have worked 3 relevant jobs/paid internships since sophomore year, the first as a web developer and computer technician that I sought after earning my Comptia A+ Certification. I have been working there since (in fact.. I'm typing from a computer there now =X). Then Junior year I got a 2nd job doing web development for a music promotion company (a pretty big deal, Aerosmith is on their roster) where I do challenging projects like help develop wireframes for a revamped user dashboard. Then I worked over the summer as a QA Engineering intern for a large social networking site devoted to the arts. I have done some freelance web design work (enough for a decent portfolio, but I unfortunately haven't gotten around to it yet =/).

In my spare time I focus on my online music magazine which I co-founded in 2003 and now solely maintain. I designed it, installed the content management system and the discussion board. I write reviews and arrange/conduct interviews. I work with many labels/PR's through the site and in fact hope to even work/intern at one some day.

So what do you think? NYU right for me? Am I right for NYU? Do I have a chance, and should I apply ED?

Just 2 points.
1. You can't apply to GSP. You can only be referred.
2. Look at Steinhardt. It may be the best fit for your interests.

Good luck.

Seinhardt definitely looks like the right school for me. I'm actually considering majoring in Music Business with a minor in Communications. Does anyone know much about the Music Business program? Am I at a disadvantage if I don't have an audition (considering I'm not very musically inclined, just have my experiences in music promotion).

You would need to take a music audition for the music business program in Steinhardt. Also, I don't believe that nyu offers a graphic design program if that is something that you are interested in considering. However, the communications program in Steinhardt would be a good possibility.
Best of luck.

I think you can get into Steinhardt.

I hope that this is helpful:

http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/music/page.php?page_id=945

rdept, the Music Business program is, first and foremost, a music program. The core curriculum is in music, music theory, music history, and keyboard skills. It is a selective program which requires an audition, an interview, and a music theory test. If you're not musically inclined, a Bachelor of Music program is unlikely the right choice for you.

I've decided to stick with Communications and I definitely do feel its right for me. Thanks for all the responses!

Also I didn't mention that I am asian and female, I don't know if that would make a difference?

If anything, it's negative. NYU has a gender imbalance - there are more females than males - and compared to general population statistics, Asians make up a larger fraction of the student body.

schools woth more females than males are best
i like females :)
