hi everyone. this is my first time posting here. I wish someone can give me an answer so I can make a decision on which school I should attend this fall. I was accepted to NYU, UCSD and BU this fall. for NYU, my parents have to pay $9500. for UCSD, $6000 and for BU is $$18000. I am from san Francisco and like to major in Econ. can someone please tell me if NYU gives me a scholarship of $49500 freshman year, will they do the same for the years to follow assuming I am staying in NY as a full time student? I heard that a lot of colleges give out full scholarship the first year, then reduce the amount each year and by senior year student will have to pay almost full amount. is this true? for UCSD, no scholarship but all govt. grants. for BU will be $26000 scholarship plus other grants. money is a big concern for me since I do not come from a wealthy family. can someone give me some ideas?

thanks everyone.

NYU is known for not giving good financial aid to ANYONE. You just said that your parents would have to pay $9500 but you are asking for $49k. Not going to happen. Boston gives ½ tuition so you will have to pay at least $20K. per year. College is expensive. This is the reality.
Is there a reason you are just noticing the costs now since you say that money is a big concern??? This is something you should have checked before you applied anywhere.

Check the terms of each scholarship to see if there is a college GPA requirement to renew them. If the GPA requirement to renew is high, like 3.5, consider the very real risk of losing the scholarship (a 3.5 GPA requirement means that you have to grade-grub like a pre-med or pre-law student).

I have never heard of a school reducing their aid to essentially zero by senior year unless there has been a dramatic change in the family’s financial position. If your aid is based on need then you should receive similar aid in following years if there is little/no change in finances. Many colleges do expect a somewhat larger student component over time either through Direct loans or summer work.

thank you guys. may be I did not present my situation clear enough. so, here it is :

nyu gives me 49500 scholarship and 5000 on grant and I will need 12000 from my parents

bu gives me 26000 scholarship and 12500 on grant and I will need 23500 from my parents

ucsd gives no scholarship but 27500 on grant and aides and I will need 6000 from my parents

my parents can only give me appox. 8000 per year and the rest I have to go to private banks for student loan.

what would you do? does nyu or bu worth the money?

thanks.

BU is definitely not worth it as you have cheaper options that are academically equivalent. What you have to decide is if you think NYU is worth paying double the cost of UCSD

With NYU, you will be flying back and forth on Southwest or another inexpensive airline. You have to add that cost because I don’t think you can afford to stay there in the summer. New York is very expensive. UCSD has a weaker social environment. Did you visit the school? You need to visit before you make your decision.

when you say ucsd gave you aids, do you mean loans? work studies? or some thing else? You need to post the net price attending a school, exclude loans.

i am sorry. may be I can make it more clear. NYU college of arts and science give me $57000 in scholarship and grants and my parents will have to pay appox. $12000 each year. UCSD college of arts and science accepted me into their honors program with $30000 scholarship and grants and my parents will have to pay $6000 each year.
I really want to try lining in NY since I have been in san Francisco all my life. yet I will be with a lot of my high school friends if I pick UCSD. what would you choose? can someone tell me more about these schools?
thank you.

You are still deciding thought deadline is May 1? You haven’t looking into these schools thoroughly at this late date? Looks like you have dropped BU, the most expensive so that is a good move. Usually scholarships and grants are renewable each year–check to see if there is a high gpa requirement like 3.5. If so, don’t take it. We see too many people come here to report losing scholarship at NYU and have to leave.

So UCSD is affordable. How will you get the extra money for NYU? 4k per year is 12k total., not too bad. But as mentioned above, your cost to go home is likely higher than the transportation allowance, so you really need at least a thousand more, so now we talk 16k. Do you have health insurance acceptable for OOS or do you have to purchase from the college? That can add 2k per year so 24k extra is getting up there. If you have no student loans you can take a 5,500 federal loan your first year, and it increases a bit after that. Why private loan? No one gives a student a private loan so your parents have to take it. Maybe they should take Parent Plus instead. You might get a good paying internship by Jr year, (not sure about sophomore year) to help, but it might get spent on living costs.

UCSD is a very good school, it seems to be a bit underrated by CA kids. It is on the ocean. It has residential colleges. Honors has priority scheduling and extra perks, right? Very helpful. NYU does not have a central campus it is integrated into the city, I’m sure it is a fun place for a city kid. It might be hard not having extra spending money because people go out more as opposed to more central residential campuses where there is more hanging out or events on campus.

did NYU put a 5500 student loan in your pkg? if not, ask them for one.

you will not be able to get a private loan from a bank unless your parents apply with you, qualify, and co-sign.

you may need to work over the summer to earn money.

your scholarship should not be cut.

What do you want in your school experience? I think this thread would be better suited on the Fin Aid thread. But you have @mom2collegekids posting here are from what I’ve seen, she really knows her stuff! So I guess youre in good hands either way lol.

NYU rarely gives that amount of money so they must really want you :). If they didn’t package a federal (“direct”) loan in the scholarship package, request a $3,500 subsidized loan, which would make NYU doable.
Do you want to discover another part of the country and live in a “city that never sleeps”?
Or would you rather enjoy the great weather of San Diego and Honors Perks?

UCSD>NYU for econ. also staying instate is better, since NYU–>SF will be costly over time.

no brainer, imo. is grad school a thought?
