Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]

[] SAT I (breakdown): 2200 (780 CR, 680 M, 740 W)
[] ACT: 34 (36 English, 31 Math, 35 Reading, 35 Science, 10 Writing)
[] SAT II: 740 Math L1, 690 Math L2, 620 Physics (thought I was going to be an engineer, ha ha, so I took tests in the subjects I suck at - math and physics)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.67
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Psychology (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): I read, write, snowboard, and travel. No organized school activities; other things have taken priority.
[] Job/Work Experience: I babysit often and am currently interning at the inpatient psychiatric ward of my local hospital. (I don’t believe I mentioned the latter in my application; I applied for the internship after my application was submitted.)
[] Volunteer/Community service: I have taught vacation bible school classes and helped construct haunted houses, and volunteer at random events every couple weeks or so.
[] Summer Activities: I moved nearly every summer, so not much. I spent last summer reading, writing, and attempting to teach myself some Russian. The aforementioned VBS instruction took place during the summers before ninth and tenth grade.
[] Essays: My main Common App essay was about how dealing with depression has changed and strengthened me over the past five years. The extracurricular blurb on the Common App was about how I try to condense reality when I’m writing, and the supplemental NYU essays focused on a trip to Venice and… something. Oh! How I anticipate the opportunities available in New York - the variety of internships, job possibilities, museums and zoos, etc.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I had two, one from my AP Psych/Economics teacher (with whom I am in very good graces) and one from my eleventh-grade English teacher.
[] Counselor Rec: I did not ask her to submit a recommendation. I haven’t been at my current school for very long, so I don’t know how she evaluated me on the school and mid-year reports. She seems to like me…?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]

[] Strengths: I believe my ACT scores and essays were the shining parts of my application. My second semester scores for eleventh grade probably also helped; it was my first all-A semester since middle school. The fact that they coincided with some mental health improvement probably helped drive the case that I am much better off, both intellectually and emotionally, than I used to be.
[] Weaknesses: My grades, particularly my first semester senior grades. I tend to have A’s and B’s, but received my first C last semester in calculus. I don’t have many extracurricular activities, either. Mentioning mental health was a risk on my part, but I was aware of stigmas attached to the topic and reconciled with the fact that I may have tipped the scales against myself. I believe it paid off, however.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Most likely because of my essays. Test scores are important, yes, but NYU emphasizes wanting to know the applicant as a person, and this is reflected in their acceptance demographics.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Middlebury denied me; I’m not really surprised. Washington University wait-listed me (as they do to everyone). Boston University accepted me, as did a handful of other schools: Goucher, Hartwick, Kettering, and Rochester Institute of Technology. I’m waiting to hear back from a few others.

[/ul]General Comments: NYU Shanghai would be an incredible experience. It will be very difficult to decide where I’m going. On a side note, if there are any incomplete sentences in this, it’s because I was jumping around while answering questions.
