NYU Shanghai

Hey guys!

So I don't see any threads dedicated to discussing about NYU Shanghai so here's one. Anyone out there who already applied/will apply to NYU Shanghai?

Has anyone visited it yet?

My friend told me that its acceptance rate will be 2-5%. That sounds ridiculous to me but I don't really know.

for Shanghai students…
they can consider apply if they are top ten in each school…

@iSeraphic Did you apply to NYUSH?
I’ve been invited to have a digital interview with one of admission counselor. A little bit worried, because I’ve never done it before.

Guys, do you know smth about the financial aid for international student in NYUSH?

From NYU Shanghai website I have:
NYU Shanghai will also make financial aid available for international students. In addition, merit scholarships will also be available for top students.

And from NYU website:
NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai will offer generous need-based financial support in the form of grants/scholarships, regardless of citizenship.

I’m confused.

Oh hey guys! Yeah I made a thread a few days ago for NYU Shanghai interviews!

I’m in the same boat with the person above me- I was contacted for an interview (I applied ED1) but I haven’t gotten a response yet. I’m assuming it will be Skype or phone.

I’m not in the top ten of my class, (but im in the top 4%) I’m 23/522. But I’m a female from Texas and I don’t need financial aid.

I wish I knew more about this program- it’s awkward cause it’s the first year they’re doing it and EVERYONE seems to be confused.

Where are y’all from and what are your stats like?

GPA: 3.73/4.22w
ACT: 32
White female from Texas

@thawowtso
I’m from Russia. And btw I’ve been living in Texas for one year as an exchange student. :slight_smile: I even have graduated from american high school with GRA 3.7. But in Russian school my GPA is 4.0.
I didn’t take ACT.

Oh wow! That’s such a coincidence! I’m from north Dallas (the less hick area of Texas… Well, relatively) but I hope you liked it regardless :)

So… maybe im really impatient. However, I replied to the email asking for an interview Friday early afternoon. And now its Monday night :confused: Did anyone already get a response?

wait Guys, do u mean it is very competitive to apply to NYU shanghai, oh my , i only gonna write my supplement essay these days

Well, here’s the thing. Their other campus at Abu Dhabi has only a 2% acceptance rate (making it the most competitive undergrad school in the nation). Now they’re making another campus opening 2013 in Shanghai, however no one (including the admission officers) know what the admissions statistics will be like. They are pulling half the class from China, and half from countries around the world. It really depends on who ends up applying.

Whoopsies. By nation I mean united states. But if anyone else finds a undergrad school that accepts less than 2% tell me- so I’ll call it in the world for now.

The interview guy emailed me back and said that they are only interviewing competitive candidates!

So… out of the 10 posts so far, 6 of them are from me. Haha. Well, I guess 7 now.
I have an interview schedules for tomorrow afternoon. Does any one else have an interview scheduled?

@thawowtso
You are right! Haha. I lived in Killeen and even enjoyed it. I got a lot of military experience. The only one thing that I missed was our beautiful russian nature. :slight_smile:
Thanks for sharing information! Now, I have more hope!
I didn’t hear anything back from them.
Good luck with your interview!!

@thawowtso
Btw, will it be skype or phone?

I will have the interview tomorrow night!

Oh! Yeah mines at 4:30 EST with Julie. Good luck!!!

I really want to apply to NYUSH but after thinking about it for quite a while…I’m not so sure anymore. It’s so new that I feel like I will be limited in the courses I’m offered…for example will there be languages? Or just English and Chinese? I also want to do business…

I just feel like since its the first year this school has ever existed…they’re not offering everything NYUNY has.

Hi, i lived in Shanghai, if you’re applying NYU-SH, then good for you. I believe the NYU-SH would have a more competitive admissions in the future. As I know, there’re sort of SAT prep schools in China, which helps student prepare college application as well as SAT all throughout 4 years. Many people get 2300+ on SAT and plenty of ECs.

OH! And i forgot to say before that I’m doing mine over Skype.

@iseraphic I think theres a decent amount of truth in what your concerns are. The reason I applied ED is because I want to do International Business and Chinese, and after staying in China this summer I knew that that was the place I wanted to study.
It is going to have a ton of educational experiences that are priceless, namely the fact that half the class is going to be native Chinese, and having the chance to study and learn beside them is completely unique. On the otherhand, they didn’t even know what majors they were going to offer until about a month ago, and they are not very broad. Since this is their first year, there is only one academic building (but they still have the amenities like a Gym and Cafeteria). I think what it came down to for me is the fact that I really wanted to study with people of other cultures from around the globe- even at the expense of specialized classes that I could get if I went to NYU Stern.

I would just decide on whether or not you want a more non-traditional experience (thats funny to say because NYUNY is nontraditional also).
PS- As far as I know, they will only be offering language classes for Chinese and English. The goal is to have every non-native Chinese speaker speaking Chinese fluently by the time they graduate. (Another reason I REALLY want to go haha)

@jeff18- I completely agree. In years to come admissions rates and standards are going to skyrocket. This being its first year and the fact that it isnt widely known yet kept people from applying… If it is not as competitive as NYUAD, I bet it will be within a few years.
It is already much more competitive for Chinese students entering from China than other international students this year alone.
I find it so exciting that SAT prep center are going to start functioning in China like you say- it is such a sign of globalization- I start getting excited just thinking about it!
Did you apply?
