NYU Sophomore taking Questions

Post your questions!

Hey there, I’m a NYU 2015 hopeful. NYU CAS is my dream school and I was wondering whether or not to apply EDII or RD

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/1055913-edii-rd-you-decide-sortof.html

If you could take a look I’d be greatful

Oh and another question. Do you get a choice of who your roommate is freshman year?

I would say apply ED II cause you can still reject the acceptance if it is impossible for you to pay the tuition. However, if your family income is <25000 then I would say that you will get quite a nice financial aid package.

Entering NYU I was Pre-Med as well. I am going to be brutally honest with you though…The science teachers here except for one teacher do not care about the students at all. They have 1-2 hour office hours for the whole week and the class sizes are about 500 students. I am no longer Pre-Med but while I was which was up until Organic Chemistry I wish I attended a smaller school because you just do not get the proper teaching methods.

And yes you do get to choose your roommate as long as the other person submits your name as well.

Thanks for the reply. I heard that its not impossible to get to know your professors. I did also hear however, that they are very picky about talking to students, almost like they play favorites. If thats the case, I don’t really see a problem (at least for me). This state of mind may change later on.

Is it generally easier to get into nyu med? As in, do they like to retain their own students or diversify like some Ivies I know?

They diversify. It is harder to get into NYU Med if you graduated from NYU Undergrad.

citybound how well do you know steinhardt?
thank you!

I am fairly knowledgeable with Steinhardt curriculum

Citybound, what school are you in? Also where did you live for freshmen year?

CAS and Founders.

Citybound what major should I list while applying. I’m unsure as to what I want to major in later but I certainly dont feel like undeclared is the way to go. Probably will major in Bio or something.

Did you like Founders? It’s my first choice dorm right now and I’m a little anxious about the walk to and fro from campus during the winter. It doesn’t get sub 20 degrees during the winter, does it?

You can put Undeclared. I didnt declare my major until this year.

And I loved Founders! Its a clean building and the newest Freshman dorm available. The walk is about 8-10 minutes if you walk at a normal pace, so it is not bad at all. Plus it keeps off that Freshman 20. As long as you have gloves and a scarf then the weather is not bad at all. I sometimes walk from 23rd St to campus in the winter. Plus if you are really cold there is an NYU bus on 14th and 3rd Ave that will pick you up.

Citybound, the nyu description for Founders doesn’t say anything about even a community kitchen. Were you able to use other dorm’s communal kitchens or not able to cook?

Yeah you can use other dorms kitchens but usually they did not have the kitchen supplies. If you really want a kitchen then put Third North down as your first choice in housing.

Do you think one can be in Stern and also complete the pre-med requirements? Also, are you aware of people going to med school from Stern?

In addition to the Stern major, you are permitted to declare two other formally recognized areas of specialization.

However, the Pre-Med track is 10 classes and will only fulfill a Chemistry minor. Therefore, on top of your Stern major you will also have to have another major/minor. Honestly, I have not heard anyone doing this because Stern is hard enough and Pre-Med is a different story. Personally, I don’t think it would be a good idea to pair Business with Medicine at the same time, it would be overload to the max. If you are interested in both though, go into Stern and if you do not like Business then you can transfer to CAS.

what is steinhardt’s reputation?
strongest/weakest program?

thank you! happy holidays!

The Education program is really good. However, personally I feel that the programs in Steinhardt can just as well as be taken at state colleges. And the music majors are good, but I know some that regret not going to a conservatory.

Hello- I am a high school junior looking at NYU as my #1 choice. I am curious as to what my chances are at admissions. About me:

GPA (first 2 years)- 3.67 UW/3.86W (did not take freshman year seriously enough). Should be able to get all A’s in junior year which should bump my weighted GPA to just above 4.0. Mostly honors courses and 1 AP so far. Most AP’s will be available only senior year and I plan on taking them.

ACT- Planning on taking ACT in Feb. Should be able to get 33, maybe a 34 if I am lucky

Extracurricular- Played/refeferred soccer, did not make JV or varsity team though, still play on club team; Fed challenge club and Wall Street club at school; attended 5 week rigorous math camp last summer

Other- Ethnicity mixed (caucasion/indian); thinking of signing up (and hopefully getting in) macro econ class at NYU next summer to improve my odds.

Any thoughts??? Thanks so much.
