I know Greek life isn't huge at NYU, but is anybody willing to share the scoop on the sororities at NYU? And by reps I didn't just mean "The Kappas are known as the anorexic girls who love to party." I meant things like info on the dorms, which ones have the best parties, events, charities, etc/nicest, most studious, wildest, etc. girls...any insight really. I know I will be able to see for myself if I rush , but I would still like some info other than what can be gained from NYU's website or any individual sorority's website? Also, the ones I am most interested in are:

Alpha Phi Zeta
Alpha Sigma Tau
Delta Phi Epsilon
Pi Beta Phi

But, if any of the others are nice, let me know. I don't want this to become a shallow thread where people bash a sorority because the chapter's average BMI is to high...lol. Thanks!

all Panhellenic groups are housed in Lafayette Street, the Chinatown dorm. as of fall 2009, it will be the dorm that’s most south of campus, being below Canal Street. they occupy the upper levels and some of the penthouses.

most of the frats have their “houses” in off-campus housing, so they can drink a lot and make a ton of noise and have obnoxious, gross parties. (ugh, some of the things i’ve seen at frat parties. . .)

Pi Phi is the newest sorority we have here. it was chartered because the other sororities were almost at capacity. i think two sororities didn’t even have spring rush because there were SO many of them. thus, it doesn’t really have a “rep” yet, as it’s still trying to find it’s way.

As an Greek-insider I can give you some insight.

DPhiE -national: tends to be pretty popular here from what I’ve seen they’re the most like what you think of when you think sorority. They seem pretty traditional but they party a lot.

AST -national: is very academic-oriented. Very motivated, determined, ambitious bunch of girls They have the highest GPA on campus, but they party too.

Pi Phi -national: is the newest and it’s the one I’m in. We’re pretty laid-back/down to earth and we like to have our fun. I honestly love love love it. Oh and we just got suites in Lafayette so we now have housing.

I don’t know much about APhiZ just that they’re a local sorority.

For the most part, greek life is really fun. Even though NYU doesn’t seem like a place for it, there’s so much to do with it and its the most sense of a community you’ll get here. I would suggest going through fall rush and seeing which one you fit in. Because honestly you’ll know which one you fit in with the most as soon as you walk in the room as cliche as that sounds. Every sorority is great it just depends on the type of person you are and the type of people you get a long with, so you should definitly rush if you’re interested. I know I was so anti-Greek first semester, but Greek liek is so much different here than it is at other schools

This may help you. Some people will scream at it not being PC (though for a humorous piece it is pretty tame) but it is pretty accurate from everything I witnessed and heard. It’s pretty equal opportunity in the way it pokes fun, at least relative to who makes up NYU:

I heard it went from 3% to 10% of the student population in 2010 after ZTA and KKG came to campus. Also, that DPHiE and ZTA are the “best” houses, with PiPhi and AePhi in the middle, and AST and KKG at the bottom. After looking at their Facebook pages, they all look like fun groups of girls to me (except maybe AST because they hardly had any pictures).
