NYU Steinhardt for Flute/Music Performance

Hello, I’m currently a high school Junior interested in majoring in flute performance in college. I was wondering whether the Woodwind Studies program at NYU Steinhardt is comparable to other music schools such as IU Jacobs School of Music, Yale School of Music, and Manhattan School of Music in terms of faculty (especially flute), resources, performance venues, and connections.

Yale is for grad only. Do you want a freestanding conservatory or a school of music/conservatory that is part of a college or university? Manhattan, for instance, is freestanding.

There are many excellent music performance programs (BM). If finances are an issue, NYU tends to be on the expensive side.

Keep asking questions!

If tuition is paid in full, would NYU Steinhardt’s Woodwind Studies program be comparable to attending Juilliard or MSM but having to pay half tuition?

Sorry, this question isn’t clear

If tuition is paid in full…at NYU? NYU is known for being stingy with music scholarships.

All three are top names. All three are very competitive for scholarships and acceptances. Your list (including names in original message) is “top heavy” with schools of similar caliber.

Still it’s unclear what your main concern is. If you were asking about a State University with a decent music school giving a full tuition compared to MSM at half tuition and expensive living expenses…that could be a discussion particularly if debt was involved. But with top schools that are extremely competitive, I don’t know if that discussion can be had at this time.

Have you spoken with your private teacher about your list?
