My child was invited to audition for Jazz after his prescreen. The cost of this school is obviously high. Prior to investing in this trip, I was wondering if anyone had any merit money information. The school told me $15k a year was the maximium. Any information is appreciated. Thanks

NYU isn’t known for being generous with funds, and that’s pretty much across the board with all majors. I’ve known several kids who started and then had to transfer because their families just found it too difficult to pay for it. Full rides for music are like unicorns…
Look at the total cost of attendance and what your EFC would be and then examine ways to fund it should your S decide that NYU is where he belongs. He can take loans and work-study and get a part time job too, but being upfront and realistic from the beginning will make things easier.

Would you know if anyone has been successful with appealing for more $ ? They offered S a Steinhardt scholarship but iit is not enough for hm to accept their offer. I plan to contact financial aid to see if there is anything further that can be done. He’s received generous $ form another school which is financially very attractive but NYU is where he wants to be.

Sorry we ended up not auditioning live due to the high cost of the school and low merit aid vibes we were getting. Good luck

I’m in the same situation…$13,000 scholarship, but the rest in loans (no grants) This is my son’s top choice, but I don’t think that loans are a good idea. At least not loans that large. If anyone could let me know if they have been successful in receiving additional aid, please let me know. My son sent an email yesterday, but has not heard back.

vkcollege, Undergrad or Grad? Also how were you notified of the scholarship? Was it on Albert or were you sent a separate letter?

It was for undergrad. It showed up on Albert.

DD is in similar situation, different school. Her top choice offered her a 15% scholarship, absolutely no grants, her second choice offered her 50%, no grants and ungodly living expenses, a state school (her financial safety) offered full tuition. As she is our 3rd child (no 1 was in college when surprise!!!) and as we are so close to retirement we are not comfortable with cashing out a retirement account to the tune of 120K or of taking out PLUS loans and having $1400 month payments for the next 10 years, especially since no matter how prestigious a school she does her undergrad at she will need grad school. Of course she doesn’t “get it”, has offered to pay the loans off herself…DH asked her if she was perchance going to med school or had a trust fund potential spouse in her sights? I get that you need to go to the best school possible but going back to my blue collar roots - isn’t hard work worth anything anymore?
Anyhow - we are going to try to soften the blow by reminding her that state school means we will be able to send her overseas for at least a semester, we can afford to send her to kickbutt summer institutes and programs and she will be free and clear for grad school. It’s a tough one
