NYU Steinhardt Music Business Graduate Program

Dear All,

I have been accepted to the M.A in Music Business program at NYU Steinhardt commencing September 2012. Just wanted to reach out to all fellow applicants to find out if anyone else on this forum has made it. If you have been accepted, are you taking up the offer? Also, does anyone know the job prospects upon graduation, average salary etc? I'm excited about the admit but also a little skeptical at the same time.

D

I was accepted as well, and will be attending in September. I know several alumni, who graduated from the program and now work at major labels - throughout the world. And while NYU Steinhardt has one of the top music business programs in the country, any opportunity is only what you make of it. With that being said, have faith in yourself and your choices. Don’t be skeptical, unless you have tried something already. That’s just my two cents.

Best Wishes,
Christine

Thanks for your reply Christine. And congratulations on your admit. I fully agree with you on the fact that NYU has one of the top programs in country for Music Business. But, the reason I’m a bit skeptical is because their website doesn’t seem to have any sort of statistical data about what exactly students do afterwards, what positions they hold, the names of companies they work for, average salary upon graduation etc. unlike most other schools under NYU. They only say most students work for reputed record labels, publishing companies, artist managers etc etc. I think it’s a fair reason to be concerned especially if we’re going to be spending $125,000 over a period of 2 years.

Best,

Dan

Congrats to you both! I’m interested in the same program but will be applying for Fall 2013. Any idea how one can get in touch with current students/alumni of the music business with concentration in music technology program? Really want to understand what kind of music tech background they’re looking for during the application process, the website is kind of vague.

@ ATPzz123

You can contact Steinhardt directly and they will put you in touch with one of their current students/alumni. To be accepted for the music technology concentration, you should have at least some basic knowledge about how to work with industry standard recording softwares such as Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton Live etc. Since you are applying only next year, I’d suggest you spend some time interning/working at a local recording studio for three or four months to help you get the basics right. You will also have to send them some samples of your work. The music business and technology program was launched in 2011 and so it’s a rather new program but I’m sure that it will become very popular in the years to come. I wish you the very best of luck.

Oh ok, I’ve actually spent the last year or so teaching myself basic audio production; been in a few studios before for session work so I know the bare essentials. No official training however, am hoping that wont be an issue.
What abt you, are you a musician or are you completely in the management side? Am trying to understand what kind of ppl one will be studying/working with at NYU.
Best of luck for the future!

I am both actually. I’ve been a musician for the past 10 years but also had a job in management after my undergrad degree for a few years. The students in the Music Business program come from a variety of backgrounds such as engineering, accounting, social studies, music etc. It really depends on what your goals are in this field and how driven you are to pursue this particular program that ultimately decides whether you get in or not. Hope that helps.

Thanks again… Do they require some kind of accounting prerequisites also in addition to statistics prerequisites? Have sent em a mail asking about that, still waiting for a reply…

@Dandanaka You’re right, it is fair reason to be concerned with the statistics, especially given the cost of the program. While NYU does not provide much information about its Music Business alumni, there are other sources such as this forum, which is why I initially responded.

Personally, I have met and worked with numerous Steinhardt alumni in the music industry, all sharing the same sentiments as most incoming graduate students about the cost and potential for job placement. Despite experiencing hardships at one point or another, overall, none regret attending. Being that we are on the same boat, my insight is all which I can offer for now. Good luck, and hope to see you in the Fall.

Best Wishes,
Christine

Hello All,

I’m currently going through the application process for NYU Steinhardt’s Music Business program and I’m hoping to get accepted for the Fall 2013 term. Although this is my dream school, one should not put all their eggs in one basket, and I’m having trouble finding schools that offer a Masters in this type of program other than the University of Miami. If you don’t mind me asking, where are some of the other places you all applied? Thanks so much!

Hey guys

I’m thinking of applying to the MA in music business and was wondering if anyone who had been accepted and/or is a current student could answer a few questions i have. I’m currently studying a BA in Audio Engineering at SAE Oxford, so not a business based course, even though i studied Economics at A-Level I’m wondering if this will hinder my application? I’m on for a borderline 1st/2.1 in my current degree but wont have finished it until after the application deadline, did anyone else have similar conditions when applying?

I know its a lot but I just want to say thanks in advance to all :D

Josh

p.s Im from England so any international application experiences/adivce would be great as well :)

Hey all,

I am from China, I just wanna know, is there anyone want to apply for NYU Music Theory & Composition: Scoring for Film & Multimedia (MTAC/FMS-MM)? I found a lot forums, cant find anyone, and I am apply for this one.

Hey Mechelle,

Besides those colleges, there’s also the Berklee College of Music, Valencia, where I’ve applied for an MA in Music Business & Global Entertainment.

The following colleges, too, offer Master’s courses in Music Business:

University of Leeds
University of Sheffield
University of Liverpool
Birmingham City University
University of Central Lancashire

Goldsmiths (University of London)
University of West London (London College of Music)
University of Westminster
Kingston University London

I’m an EA applicant to Berklee, and am hoping for a decision by Feb 15th. Really kicked about it, but don’t know if I’ll take it up if I don’t get a scholarship.

Wrote to a present Music Business grad student at NYU Steinhardt last week, and he thinks the course isn’t all that great… definitely not worth the $ 70k you spend over 2 years (they do not give scholarships, apparently).

Hope this helped! Let me know where else you’ve applied.

Best!

Hi

My name is Alaister, I’m applying for the MA in Music Business for the fall intake. Just wondering if anyone has any indications about how tough the application process is. I’m from New Zealand, aka middle of nowwhere so this whole grad school scene is relatievely unfamilar.

I’m 25 and currently a second year lawyer in NZ having studied a Bachelor of Laws (hons) and Commerce at the University of Auckland (NB Law is not a post grad degree in NZ). Always interested in the music business, but have had limited experience in the industry - only really been involved in music reviewing for small magazines, and writing a few small copyright articles which have been published. Would love to hear your thoughts, haven’t even been to New York yet, so really excited and hopeful for this amazing opportunity.

How difficult is entry into the Music Business program? and what kind of experience/qualities are they looking for in prospective students?

Im currently a freshman pursuing a BBA, and I really want to work in the music industry (business/management side of things)

Hi all! even if this post is a bit old it addressed the main questions I have right now. I have been accepted to the NYU Steinhardt Music Business Graduate Program and I am really happy about it, but due to the cost and length of the course, I also applied to a similar degree in the University of Westminster in London, so I have the following questions:
@Dandanaka & @abcnewyork: did you both decided to attend?: If so, what do you think of the program?
@jwoodman2012: Given that you are British, what would you think of University of Westminster vs Steinhardt’s program? Westminster’s program is only one year long, which makes it more attractive in various ways…as long as its a good university and program!

Thanks in advance for your help :)
