NYU Steinhardt - Music Business

Hi! I've been looking all over the place and it's like... impossible to find out I guess "the average person" accepted to NYU per college or major and I'd really like to know if I even stand a chance at getting into NYU's music business program.

I'm a junior right now and would be applying early decision this upcoming fall. I have a 3.4 gpa, I've been in all honors classes throughout high school except for English and Latin. I'll be in AP physics, AP statistics, and AP gov/world history (idk which one) next year because at my school they only offer AP classes senior year. I go to a private school and i'm an African American female. My SAT scores are absolutely terrible...like, you'd see them and you'd die.

For EC's I play sports all three seasons during the school year (tennis, volleyball, and lacrosse). I'd be playing club lacrosse in college...or maybe varsity lacrosse if that helps me get in. I help build the sets for school plays and am on tech crew for the actual performances. I dropped Latin after 10th grade but I've been going to a Japanese school on the weekends since 9th grade. I also give little Japanese lessons to kids at my normal school during the summer. I've taken 2 kanji exams and 1 proficiency test and would be taking the Japanese SAT II this fall so my school might count it as one high school language credit. I also study Japanese and play lacrosse during the summer.

As for music I play in a rock band that I've been in since 8th grade. I've been playing piano for 9 years with lessons for 5 years and I've been playing guitar for 4 years but only took lessons for 1 year. I write a lot of the songs for my band and I've also composed pieces for my school orchestra. I've been in a video class at school for a few years where I make music videos to my own compositions and I've also written the scores for 5 other films for other students. I applied for the summer NYU music business program but idk if I got in yet. Oh, and I've also taken an interest in choreographing dance... that was kinda random...

The reason I'm interested in music business is because I'm interested in the movement of music between cultures. It seems like American music is always going outward but foreign music doesn't really come inward. I'm especially interested in the promotion of Asian music (I'm concentrated on Korean and Japanese music right now) in English-speaking countries like America, Australia, and England. Because my favorite Korean band entered a lawsuit a few years ago I've also grown an interest in... I guess you'd call it music or entertainment law. I'm also interested in finding ways to... not exactly stop illegal downloading, but make the sales for actual music go up. Like I realized by talking to fans of a lot of Korean groups that they admit to ripping music off the internet illegally but they also buy an album when it comes out because they love the artist so much. A lot of Korean and Japanese albums/singles come with tons of extra stuff like posters, books, and full length music videos (in Japan they usually only have the short versions of music videos online because you have to buy the whole thing). They also have this annoying system of selling repackaged albums which have all the songs the normal version had plus 2 or 3 more tracks. But these repackaged albums come with a whole new set of posters, books, and music videos so people end up buying everything...

Ok I'm just rambling now but do you think I could get in? I really love NYU.

It sounds like you really know what you are doing and where you want to go. Your academics and activities seem to be a very good match for NYU. Im not sure about Steinhardt’s admission criteria;it may not be as strict as CAS, but I wouldwork on bringing up the SAT scores. Can you take a prep course and retake them? You can also write a killer essay on your interest in the business. Maybe a student would have better insight, im just a parent. BTW, are you from NY? If you were you may be perfect for.Heop/cstep.

Thanks ^^
I’m retaking the SAT’s again in May then again in June if I fail again. I live in Philadelphia.

For Music Business, they are particularly interested in your math ability and like to see calculus on your transcript. If that is not possible, I would try to bring up your math score on the SAT or ACT. They want to see Music Business students keep up with Stern students, and feel that math is an important criteria.

If you can, I would recommend attending a Junior Connection info session this spring/ summer. While interviews are not granted, you will most likely get the chance to meet Music Business program head.

I was admitted to the music business program and will start this fall. Math is my worst subject and it showed on my transcript, it was my lowest score on the ACT, and I haven’t taken calculus. Maybe my essays outweighed my poor math skills but I wouldn’t stress too much about it. I also did the summer program and it was great!
You seem like a good fit for the music business program.

I’m taking honors calculus next year but since there’s also an AP calculus which I didn’t get into, would it be better to double in math and take something like AP statistics (which i did get into) and drop a CP elective like east asian studies? Or would it look better to continue with the asian theme and take east asian studies and only honors calculus?

I think any level calculus is fine. As Kristina said…she got in with weaker math scores. The head of the program for undergrads talked about math in a presentation she gave to music majors at a Junior Connection talk a few years ago. D was considering Music Business at the time but opted for Vocal Performance instead. (She is currently in her junior year at NYU.)

thanks for all the info!

do you think it makes a significant difference whether you submit a video of you performing in addition to the singing happy birthday and whatnot? i’m more of a composer rather than a performer so it’s not like i’m in recitals all the time or anything like that…besides the occasional gig my band gets…

Steinhardt is definitely the most human of all the schools, I have several friends in the music business program (from the BEMT minor) and they are in no way compared to us in Stern.

I believe you have an excellent chance. You have an absolute ton of stuff in your favor: varsity athletics, music performance, extracurriculars (unique and amazing ones too), AP courseload, probably some phenomenal recommendations, and what seems like potential for strong essays. Your SATs are probably not as bad as you think, but if you’re as concerned as you seem to be, consider a prep course or rigorous self-study program and retake them, you have more time before the ED deadline. Also, given that you’re applying ED, you have a tiny bit of slack since they’re more forgiving with ED applicants.

I think you stand a great chance of acceptance. I’m from Philly too. :)

I suggest you revisit this discussion over at the ever-helpful music forum:

[Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums)

ah really? maybe i’ll see you in…a year crosses fingers

I know that there’s ED 1 and ED 2 but ED 2 seems a little bit sketchy so i’ll aim for ED 1 as long as my SAT II scores get back on time…

did you do the summer Precollege or Steindardt What Makes A Star? Do you think the Summer helped you to get in?

I actually posted another thread with that exact question. Apparently it doesn’t really help you get in but it looks good on your application. It won’t be a deciding factor though. Oh, and I’m going the 1st session!

For the last 2 years I’ve wanted to go to NYU Steinhart but Im really nervous about whether I can get in or not.

I currently have a 3.7 gpa. I am in line to be 1st chair French Horn in band and am an officer in my schools Music Honor Society and Newspaper Club. When I complete high school I will have spent 3 years as my high school radio station’s music director and have had internships in radio promotion giving me 3 years of experience in the music industry. I got an 1870 on my SAT"s but I plan on retaking them. I am in a couple of AP courses and am a much stronger student in english and social studies. I hear math is very important but I only have a b-b+ math grades and have only taken pre-calculus, although next year I plan on taking AP Statistics. Can someone please help me out?

Also if anyone applied to the What Makes A Star? program is it relatively easy to get in?

Hi I was wondering had anyone on the board applied to for the MBA music business program and whether the heard anything back . I know it’s pretty early but I’m interest to know due to the reopening of the fall application on 2/5/2013.

I also wanted to know whether anyone applied ED and whether they’re been accepted and if so can you produce a very brief stat i.e gpa, major, undergrad attendend, ect.

I am a recent graduate from DePaul University I graduate with a bachelors of commence in Accounting. My gpa was low 2.9 but DePaul accounting program is very rigorous. I love music I’ve planned the flute, trumpet,French horn, and drums. I aspire to become a manager(business or artist) in the music industry and thought this program was an excellent program.

If you are a graduate student in this program can you please give us insight on the program and how successful you were in finding an internship. I’m excite hope to hear back from you all.
