NYU Steinhardt studio art program

I just submitted my application to NYU and was wondering if anyone has experience/knowledge about the studio art program at NYU? I’m thinking of possibly going into medical illustration for grad school, so that means I would need to take biology courses in college. Would I be able to minor in biology or am I allowed to just take courses in biology? Which do you think would be better?

My D is in the studio art program and is a senior. Did you apply to studio art or to CAS? Assuming you submitted a portfolio and applied to studio art, you will be able to have a minor in bio if you want. It is even possible to double major if you come in with a decent amount of AP credits. The first year is a foundation year, so you will not be able to take any additional courses since the art and Writing the Essay requirements for freshman will put you at 18 credits per semester. But you will have a lot more latitude after Freshman year. To see the classes available to you in Bio, you should look into the Bio department’s requirements. There may be some classes that are only open to students if they major or minor in bio.

You do realize that the studio art program is contemporary and conceptually based? You will be able to do illustration in your drawing concentration (if that is what you choose), but realistic drawing will need to be incorporated into a contemporary theme or conceptual focus.

Feel free to ask any questions—D LOVES the program!

Hi @uskoolfish thanks for your response! I applied to studio art at Steinhardt and yes, I realize the program is more more conceptual and contemporary. However, this is okay for when I am eventually looking to apply to grad school because most medical/scientific illustration require any BFA/BA with a biology minor, or vice versa. I was specifically drawn to NYU because it’s not an all-inclusive art school, its location in the city (where there are many museums), and not to mention I heard its fine art program is pretty up there. The problem is… NYU is SO EXPENSIVE! Also looking at Hunter, heard their art program is amazing, but I hear dorms are scarce :frowning:

Do you have any other recommendations for colleges in NYC that are good for art, but not an all-art school?
Also, that’s awesome to hear your daughter loves the program! What does she want to be able to do with her fine art degree career-wise after graduating/Is she looking to go to grad school to specialize/further her education?

D applied to NYU ED. She also applied and was accepted to Pratt, but that’s a true art school. She did not explore any other options in NYC.

My D plans to stay at NYU for another year and get her MA degree in art education. She would like to teach and be a working artist. Ultimately she might like to pursue her MFA and teach on a university level. She wants to live in NYC and hopes to work on her art (sculpture) and get into gallery shows and exhibitions.

@uskoolfish I just received my admission letter in the mail today - I got in

@pigments Congrats to you! D is going to be at NYU next year. She graduates this May with her BFA and will then get her MA in art education. Feel free to ask any questions!
