My daughter is accepted at NYU Steinhardt, Berklee and Belmont for Vocal performance. We are waiting on others but these are the top three. They are all so different and all seem great! She seems to like the vibe of a big city and she has endlessly trained in voice for many years so is not intimidated by trying new and difficult music
classes. She is also a songwriter and would describer herself as jazzy pop. She received partial scholarships at all three schools and we have saved for her college.
We would love some feedback on which to choose! Thanks so much for any and all thoughts and suggestions.
Congratulations! If she’s leaning towards jazz/pop among the three, I think it’s tough to beat Berklee. Awesome program and track record in a great city.
Thank you!
Congratulations! Those are all fantastic schools. That’s a tough choice. My daughter is at Belmont/songwriting. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Had my daughter applied and been accepted to NYU that may have been her top choice. Her biggest regret is not completing the NYU application. We wouldn’t have been able to afford it though. I would suggest researching the actual program curriculum at each school to see which one best aligns with what your daughter wants to study.
Thank you! My daughter went to the songwriting vocal camp at Belmont and fell in love with it, however, she noticed that they do choir and classical for the whole first year. She has never done choir and wasn’t super excited about that. She did ALL State and All State Jazz in High School so she has studied quite a classical along the four years and wanted to move into strictly pop and adult contemporary with some jazz. Does that sound right for Belmont? What year is your daughter? My daughter would love to chat with her I’m sure!! thanks again. BTW the NYU application was daunting!!! Also why did she choose to not apply to Berklee?
My daughter was accepted to Berklee. We simply couldn’t afford Berklee. That was incredibly difficult for her. However she now feels like she wouldn’t want to be anywhere other than Belmont/Nashville. I didn’t know Belmont had a songwriting camp. I know NYU does. There is a lot to love about Belmont. Belmont has several majors. The contemporary voice major does require I think it’s two years of classical training. They are also allowed to participate in ensembles. My daughter is a songwriting major because she didn’t want to study classical anymore. Songwriting majors have to audition to be accepted into the program. My daughter researched the actual courses that were required for each major at several schools before she made her decision. No program was perfect.
Thank you so much for your response Yes Berklee is so expensive as well as NYU. I think my daughter would love Belmont as well although she is worried about too much classical training for those first two years. She studied that on her own for 4 years to get into All State Choir and Jazz Choir. They didn’t have that training at her high school. She’s a bit burnt out on it I think.
Appreciate your input so much!
