NYU Stern - AMA

Hey guys, I’m Class of 2017 at NYU Stern. Congrats to everyone who got in yesterday! For those of you who did not, don’t worry there are a lot of other great undergraduate B-schools out there.

I wanted to start this thread to help out anyone looking at NYU Stern this year or even in the future. Obviously speaking just from my own opinion, not in any official capacity.

Feel free to post questions here or PM me.

What is a typical freshman schedule?

Writing the Essay/ Commerce & Culture (depends on SAT writing score)
Calculus I (unless you have good AP scores)
Text & Ideas / Natural Science / Cultures & Contexts (You have to take one of each eventually, but usually just do 1 per semester)
Cohort Leadership Program (P/F)
Statistics
Microeconomics

What’s the difference between Writing the Essay and Commerce & Culture? Which one do you take if your writing subscore is what?

@Crzcorgi WTE is a more universal class, as in the curriculum is pretty much the same across the university. It focuses mostly on creative writing. Commerce and Culture is for those who score 730+ on SAT Writing and it is essentially a class that looks towards modern media (movies, books, etc) to see business topics and such.

So if you scored above 730+, then you’re definitely eligible for Commerce and Culture? It sounds pretty cool @renegade23

@sternbanker17

  1. Which class, Commerce and Culture or Writing the Essay, do you think is easier? Which one did you take?
  2. How easy is it to get an internship freshman year? Paid internship/job?!

Thanks in advance.

@stehyh: My year it was 730+, but I think it changes each year depending on how your class did overall. It should be around there though

@Nottryingtoohard:

  1. Commerce and Culture, I took WTE.
  2. Kind of hard, you’ll have to look through Wasserman (the internal job portal). If you get involved in clubs, they might be able to pass some things down to you. You should mainly be looking for something that you can talk about to get a relevant sophomore year/summer job.

@sternbanker17 how high does your writing score need to be to get out of that class?
