I am just curious to know what my chances are to be accepted ed into NYU stern.. I was debating of ed at UPENN Wharton but i feel it is too much of reach.. here are some of statistics..

School: Private School in Princeton, NJ (Hun School)
SAT (superscore): 2370 (800 in math, 800 in writing, 770 in critical reading)
i still need to take subject tests but NYU does not require subject tests
GPA: around a 3.6 to 3.7
course rigor: AP Calc AB and AP stat as a sophomore. This year as a junior i am taking AP Calc BC and AP Euro. Next year I will be taking AP Spanish, AP Art History, Multi-variable Calculus. I know it isnt like over the top but private schools arent the same as public schools when it comes to the rigor of ap classes. i got a 4 on ap calc ab last yr. my school doesnt offer ap econ but i have taken regular. and honors for my core non ap classes

EC:
-I am an SAT and math tutor
-I have my own non profit organization. i started it by myself. it is a registered company and everything that helps artisans that are in poverty, with this i have tons and tons of community service hours. i go to small villages in different countries to make this possible. (its kind of a big deal i think)
-I have played varsity tennis at my school and was ranked in the top 30 in the state.. i am probably gonna get an award for this year from my coach. (not getting recruited but i will still contact nyu head tennis coach)
-I played on the atlantic regional cricket team and we place 3rd in nationals. its kinda unique.

i will have strong essays. i have a lot to write about, and i am good writer.

haha this doesnt seem like too much compared to other kids on here.. but yeah that is what i have. im kinda banking on my SAT scores to take me far.

Even if NYU doesn’t require Subject Tests, you should still take two or three. Always do the things that may separate you from other applicants. That being said, I’m sure that a lot of people will submit SAT IIs even though the school doesn’t require them.

Other than that, from your SAT alone, plus the decent GPA, I’d say Match.

ill be sure to send my sat ii math and whatever other subject test i take to nyu with my application to set me apart. thanks for your advice i appreciate it.

Stats wise you’re a match for what they’re looking for, but Admission to Stern is so competitive that nothing is a sure thing at all, especially considering that your GPA is a bit lower than what they are looking for.

thats what i am worried about as well… i dont know how they account for difficulty of the high school. my high school is a private college prep institution so im curious to know how they compare that level of academics to that of a mediocre public school. my fingers are crossed that everything works out.

If your school has “brand name” to it, as in ranking, then a NYU will definitely see that a flat 90 at your school is far better than a 96 in a “mediocre” school. Don’t worry, they have ways of finding out.

haha yea a flat 90 is exactly what i have. thats good that they do that. thanks.

i still have until november to strengthen my application. do you guys have any recommendations of what i can do to push me over the top? this is my dream school.

oh and i have one more question… you guys seem like you know a decent amount about the college process. freshman and junior year i had a 3.8 gpa… in the second half of my sophomore year my grades fell apart… i had a lot of family and friend problems… i lost my grandfather, my younger sister was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and one of my closest friends committed suicide… i know colleges don’t care about all if this stuff but it definitely affected my academic potential a lot… do i just have to suck it up, or will i be able to explain colleges why my grades dropped? i am first generation in this country and the first kid in my family to go to an american college, so i dont know that much about this stuff.

can i get some more ideas whether nyu stern is possible? PLEASE!!

^write about that in your essay. Tell them how that affected you (obviously both socially and academically), and what you learned from it. Other than that lol, I don’t think you have anything to worry about buddy… your SAT scores clearly show you’re a bright kid, and shows the rigor of your school. Take subject tests in Math 2C and a science (and get 800 in Math II). But even the fact that you stated a nonprofit organizations shows prowess in business, and I’d say you have 50-60% chance. Of course, this is MY estimate, and should NOT be used to evaluate anything.

yup ill be taking math 2 this upcoming saturday.

2370 superscore? Seems like a higher score than just NYU Stern.

My sibling got into stern with 3.7 Unweighted gpa, good essays and recommendations, and average extracurriculars. If Stern is your top choice, you should look into early decision to up your chances. NYU has ED 1 and 2, if it’s your second choice. After all, getting into college is a large percent luck.

@promotionman… i know my sat scores are high but i feel my gpa is kinda low… other than nyu stern… there is upenn wharton which is reach… northwestern, umich, ucberkley, uchicago, carnegie mellon, cornell… are some other schools i am looking at as well… the reason im kinda set on nyu stern is because i want to go into the finance sector of business… and for investment banking and hedge funds nyu stern comes right after upenn wharton in the rankings…
[Finance | Rankings | US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/business-finance)

@sungoose im def gonna at least ed2 at nyu stern if not ed1… if i ed2 at nyu stern ill probs ed1 at upenn wharton… my chances there arent too bright though haha

if you guys feel like im underselling myself and i have shot at business programs better than stern let me know… im the first in my family who will be going to an american university because i am first generation here so maybe i dont know about the process as well as you guys do.

Based on your GPA, Stern is probably the better fit for you than the other schools, but if you want to apply to a higher reach school ED1, definitely go the ED2 route with Stern. You’re SAT scores are high, but that’s no assurance of getting into a top tier school, especially without the 3.8-4.0 GPA that many students have. However, NYU isn’t very good about financial aid…
