NYU Stern credits

Hi! I am currently a student who has just transferred into NYU stern as a sophomore for this upcoming fall. I've been reviewing NYU Stern's requirements for classes and stuff, and I am super confused. How come some of Stern's required courses are 4 credits (like EGB and Principles of FA) but you only need 12 credits to fulfill a Stern major. That means 4 classes with each course being worth only 3 credits each. Why are the major classes worth only 3 credits and not 4?

Also, some of my classes that I took before does not seem like it will transfer over and fulfill Stern requirements and so it will instead act as elective credits. This makes me a bit bummed out since I wanted to do a double major in Stern and a minor in CAS. If I did pursue a minor in CAS, I might go over the 128 credit limit. Will I be able to go over the limit, and if so, will it be expensive doing so?

And If I did a second Stern major using my elective credit space, will it again be 16 credits or 12 credits? (I've been looking on forums and people having been saying its 12 and others saying 16) I'm new and I'm really confused at the moment.

If you can answer such questions, I will greatly appreciate it!

Hey

I’m a rising sophomore at Stern myself and my mom asked me to see if I could respond to this. This is her account.

Ok, so to answer your first question. Most Stern classes are 4 credits, like EGB, FA, Calc, Org Comm. Most Stern concentrations need you to do the 4 credit Intro class (1 of the 6 classes in Functional Business Core) and 12-16 additional credits. This could mean three 4 credit classes, four three credit classes or any other combination of those numbers. For example, the Marketing concentration needs you to do:

 1. Intro to Marketing (4 credit)
 2. Two 3 credit required classes (Marketing Research and Consumer Behavior)
 3. 6 more credits of Marketing classes (you can choose these from a wide range of 2 and 3 credit classes)

Now I’m not really sure why the classes for the major aren’t worth 4 credits. Maybe the university wants to let you do some classes you enjoy with leftover electives. Or explore your interests. Also, keep in mind, there aren’t any ‘majors’ in Stern anymore. They’re referred to as ‘concentrations’ and thats probably because they’re not supposed to be as heavy.

If it’s still confusing you can ask one of the counsellors what your situation is. They’re really easily available and you can make appointments online through Albert.

You have 44 elective credits, so if you do a second concentration, it’s 12 credits and a CAS minor should be about 20 credits (their majors are 40 credits). So maybe doing a CAS minor isn’t the best option. And yeah, extra credits cost a lot of moolah.

I know the Marketing and Finance concentrations are 12 credits. Not sure about the others. But they’ll be between 12 and 16.

Hope that helped!
