NYU Stern [Internal Transfer] - A Comprehensive Guide For All Applicants

Hi Everyone,

I have recently been accepted to NYU Stern as an Internal Transfer and I wanted to share some advice to any potential applicants next year. From what I heard from the admissions office, over 1000 applicants applied to Stern, and there was a 10% acceptance rate. Please keep in mind that the admissions process is very competitive and you should apply with a strong backup in mind. Feel free to respond to this post with any questions and I will try to get back to you as soon as possible.

Required Courses:
Cultures and Context (or Cultural Foundations I, II, and III)
Text and Ideas (Or Social Foundations I, II, and III)
Writing the Essay (Or Writing I and II)
Calculus I (Or Math for Econ I and Math for Econ II)
Intro to Microeconomics
Statistics and Regression (6 Credits) (Or 4 and 2 Credit Split)
Financial Accounting
Intermediate Microeconomics (*This is a suggested course, but I know of someone who was rejected with a 4.0 GPA and this was the only suggested course he/she was missing)

Suggested Courses:
Intro to Macroeconomics
Calculus II (if not taking Math for Econ II)
Intro to Marketing (or another Business Core Course at Stern)
Foundations of Finance

*Any Quantitative/Business Course will be a good addition to your transcript as well, so there are many other courses that can be included under suggested courses, but the ones I listed were the ones I took (unless I italicized the course).

Grades Needed:
You should have a 3.80 GPA or higher. I had a 3.91 GPA without the admissions office checking my Intermediate Micro Grade (B+) as I took the course during the Spring Semester of Sophomore Year. Also, that 3.80+ GPA grade must come from the courses that Stern actually cares about, such as Calculus I, Financial Accounting, Intro to Micro, and Statistic & Regression. You should not get below an A- in any of those courses.

Application Deadline: March 1 (Try to submit your application essays before February 1)

Lastly, try not to keep all of the tough courses for the second half of the semester because Stern will prioritize applicants who have completed certain courses rather than one’s who are in the process. The only course I suggest you take during Spring semester that is very important is Intermediate Micro (this advice applies to Sophomore applicants, as they have more courses to take).

Good luck on your transfer applications everyone! Hope you make it!

P.S. Freshman Applicants will not be required to take all of those courses. I have also posted some links below relating to Internal Transfer Applicants.

This is definitely a valuable post but honestly I find it hard to believe that of the 1000 people who applied, 10% were let in. You are telling me that Stern adds 100 kids every year from internal transfer? Highly doubt that. The graduating class is not going to change that significantly from its start of ~600-610.

Hello SternBusiness,

As I said above, that is what the admissions office directly told me. They could just be giving random numbers, but I do not think they would do that. Furthermore, at the transfer orientation, I would say I saw just about 100 students. Nothing posted above is 100% certain, it is just information through my experience and what I heard/saw from others.

Is it only possible to transfer during freshmen/sophomore year? Still though, I find it so hard to believe that the class size will grow to 800 by graduation. In addition, when looking at Stern’s undergraduate website the “By the numbers” section states that total undergraduate enrollment is 2575. With a class size of approximately 610, that leaves 135 addditional spots over 4 grade levels.

I think you have forgotten that many students do transfer out to even better schools like Wharton. Look, I’m not trying to lie about anything in this post. I thought I made it clear that this is just through what I heard and went through, not through hard facts and figures.

And to answer your question, it is only possible to transfer during Freshman or Sophomore year. Say the upcoming sophomore class receives 50 students and the upcoming junior class receives the other 50, then the class size for each grade rises to ~660. That number does not include the amount of students who transfer out. Many students end up transferring to Wharton and other Business Schools. Therefore, accepting 100 students total per year is not such a crazy figure when you have over 1000 internal transfer applicants. Furthermore, figures may differ every year depending on the students who choose to transfer out and the amount of applicants Stern has. Lastly, the class of 2015-2016 enrollment was 592, which leaves more space for internal transfer applicants as well. Once again, figures are different every year, but the “100” number I was told of was given to me straight from the admissions office.

@Anonymous222 You said freshman applicants won’t be required to take all of the courses. Do you mean freshmen who are trying to internally transfer? Or do you mean freshman as in first time college freshmen?

@Anonymous222 What was your GPA when you applied? Not just from the Stern courses but overall. Also, how many sophomores do you think there were or you know applied and got in?

Hey, my GPA overall when I applied was a 3.86. In terms of the Sophomore/Junior breakdown, I would say it was roughly 70 Sophomores and 30 Juniors. Also, about 25 out of the 100 transfer students came from LSP, the rest were from other schools in NYU such as CAS and Gallatin.

Hey if my gpa is a 3.875 I got a B+ in calc I and a A- in my intro to macro class and all As in my cultural, social, and writing classes.
What do you think are my chances?

My mistake that was an A- in principles of microeconomics

Hey, those are great stats! I think you have a good chance as long as you take Intermediate Micro and get at least a B+ in it.

So which courses do you suggest to take in the fall and spring semester? How to divide them will be better? (great posy btw!! really helpful!!)

Does the Expository Writing program have to be completed when apply?
Is the courses list in the post for sophomore who applied at the end of the third semester or the forth?
Can I apply at the end of the third semester, before the deadline of November.?
I am an international student, so I have to take one more required writing course which makes me unable to take both the Text & Ideas and Contexts & Culture. Will that be a problem?

In the end, thank you so much for this post! Glad I get to see this before I plan for my first-year curriculum. Here is an incoming student! Bow to the elder!

Hi, from what I saw on the Stern website, they only consider transfer students for the fall semester, meaning the deadline is March 1.

Hi, I am an incoming lsp freshman this year and I’ve talked to some of the seniors from NYU, I can say it’s pretty accurate that Stern accepts about 100 transfer applicants.(One senior from class of 2020 told me quite a lot of the students he knew got accepted, don’t know the exact number though)
I understand that there is an application essay we must write, can you tell us about the essay? Thank you so much!

I wonder why it is better to submit the application earlier than the deadline. Also, I would appreciate some advice on the transfer essay.

Hi, if i am in SPS, is there any possibility for me to transfer to Stern?

Hi,
I’m applying to NYU Stern this year as a high school senior and wanted to know what secondary school is best for if I don’t get into NYU Stern but would still give me a chance of eventually internally transferring into Stern. Would I be better off indicating LSA, Gallatin or should I only indicate interest in NYU Stern and not allow them to consider me for another college within NYU if I’m not admitted into Stern?
Thank you so much

Thank you for the excellent discussion regarding internal transfers from other NYU schools to NYU Stern. Does anyone have any updated perspectives, particularly over the past year or two (2018 or 2019)?

Alongside the transfer, I am wondering what kind of internship and other co-curricular activities you did.
