NYU Stern Major Choice Help

I want to double major in Finance and Stats. Is this feasible? Or a waste of time? I want to be able to have the choice between following a future as an actuary or as a finance person (maybe i-banking?).

Then I would do Finance & Actuarial Science instead of Stats

@qwertyzxc But I’ve heard that it isn’t a useful major.

What do you mean it’s not a useful major? - all the classes in the actuarial science major are probably required for you to be able to become an actuary and if you want to have a chance of passing the actuarial exams

That’s of course if you want the option of the being an actuary

@qwertyzxc Well, I’ve heard that it is better to do a math major and then join Actuarial Society. I’m worried that getting my degree in Actuarial Science will limit me to just actuary jobs.

What do you mean by “better”? That’s not true - I personally know a couple of people who majored in Actuarial Science and are now / will be working at top banks.

If you want to do math do math - there is no better or worse - depends on what you are looking for. For the most options, math is much more broad but by no means will doing actuarial science limit you to actuarial jobs

The skills you’ll learn in the actuarial major are highly valued by pretty much any business employer and I would argue its much more practical than math, where upper level courses get very abstract
