[NYU Stern] Requirements & Advice

Hello,

Currently my unweighted GPA is at 2.8 (really bad, I know.)

My dream school is NYU Stern and im 100% sure im going to do ED there.
I have not taken SAT/ACT yet.
I’m currently in the IB Program in my junior year and I have a couple of questions,

I’m in math studies currently and I wanted to know if that is really going to impact my acceptance to NYU Stern?
I’m currently raising my GPA Through a program called FLVS, im doing this by taking multiple honors courses. in my Junior year currently I’m pretty sure my grades will equal to a unweighted 3.7, I have an upward trend, 2.7 > 2.8 > 3.7 ( predicted and im pretty sure ill get)
I’ve taken 3 AP tests so far, and in my junior year currently I only have one honors course, rest is AP/IB.

After doing some calculations, I found out that If I get a 3.7 my junior year both 1st sem and 2nd sem my unweighted will only equal a ~ 3.1, so I took some flvs classes to make it a ~3.3. I wanted to know if its a good idea to take some more FLVS classes to make it into a 3.6/3.7 unweighted GPA, I’m only doing Honors Courses on FLVS, I don’t know if its a good idea to take AP classes on FLVS. I’m currently studying 3 hours a night and will be taking my SATs in March 2017 so im predicting around a 1450/1600. as for my ACT i have no clue. My main question is, If i do all these things is their a higher chance of me getting into NYU Stern. I’m also in the programming club for 4 years and doing competition in FBLA, and have 200+ hours of volunteering at a non-profit and many other ec’s. I’d also like some tips on improving my GPA and overall chances to get into selective colleges.

Hey @ethicsnyu ! I’m an international student in the senior year, applying to NYU for entry in Fall 2017. I’ve done some researching in the past for information on applying to NYU Stern, and have some information that might be helpful to you.

Before I continue, here is a link to the steps to apply to NYU as a first-year applicant:
http://www.nyu.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/how-to-apply/all-freshmen-applicants.html

NYU, unlike majority of the other universities, only require ONE qualification that proves academic excellence. Essentially, they require one of the following:
•SAT Reasoning Test (writing test and optional essay not required)
•ACT (writing test not required)
•Three SAT Subject Test scores
•Three AP exam scores
•International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
•Three IB higher-level exam scores if not an IB Diploma candidate
•Nationally accredited exam that shows you completed your secondary education

This may be to your advantage if you believe that your previous/current GPA is weak, and are confident to receive a very good SAT/ACT grade.

Here’s another link for that: http://www.nyu.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/how-to-apply/all-freshmen-applicants/standardized-tests.html

Despite that, I will keep track of this thread for further information that can assist me in my application process!

@Suj170499 It’s true that you only need to report one form of standardized testing, but you always need to submit your GPA, which will be weighed just as much as, if not more than, your test scores.

@ethicsnyu It looks like you’re doing a lot of predicting. I’m not familiar with FLVS, but I’d do everything I could to get my GPA to at least 3.6 unweighted. (An upward trend would help you tremendously as well if you’re able to do it.) Also, make sure you take some timed practice tests to make sure a 1450 is reasonable; I’d go for at least a 1480 in practice. Also, I’d try to get some leadership positions in your ECs. You have a bit of an upward battle in front of you, but it can definitely be done. Good luck!
