I am currently applying to NYU Stern as a transfer applicant. I know they have really high standards and I could really use some advice to help my application. I am an external transfer. I was rejected last year and would like to keep trying to get into my dream school.
How would you recommend i strengthen my application? How can I show interest?
Obviously you are going to have to do well in your current school’s curriculum which is a given. In terms of things you can do beyond academic performance is to improve your chances I would have a few extracurriculars that show dedication (rather than a long list of topics that you can’t really elaborate on) and ace your transfer essays.
I am going to specifically focus on the essays because that is what I feel led me to be a successful transfer given that my high school stats weren’t phenomenal, and while I did excel during my freshman year, it was my transfer essay that told a cohesive story of that history and why Stern was special for me.
While I don’t review student applications obviously, I do review a lot of career applications and it is surprisingly easy to distinguish applicants that are:
Genuinely interested in both the culture and academics
Genuinely interested in the culture but indifferent to the academics
Genuinely interested in the academics but indifferent to the culture
Not really all that interested but applied generically along with a long list of other colleges
The thing that is very unique to Stern and NYU overall is that the culture and lifestyle of the city has a huge impact on your performance as a student given how interwoven they are. While I won’t share my essay since everyone’s should be relative to their own personal experiences, it touched strongly on that point.
