NYU Stern Transfer

Hello Everyone,

I am currently attending a community college in California and am a freshman. I am really trying my hardest to transfer to NYU Stern for my junior year. Currently, I have a 3.84 gpa (I had one B in a class that I took in high school), and will hopefully get it to 3.93 by the time my applications are sent. I am currently in Calculus 2, and am going to continue to Calculus 3 and perhaps differential equations. I have participated and dedicated myself to several different extra-curriculars at my school.

I do have a couple of questions.

I am looking at the requirements, and see listed "an introductory business, marketing, or management course." I want to take an intro to business class, but I am afraid that if I take that class, I might be at too many units (67-70). What do you guys think? An important note is that I will have completed every other requirement.

Also, are there any other students from community colleges who have or are in the process of transferring to NYU Stern. I really would appreciate any further advice and ways through which I can be helped or guided.

Lastly, in terms of extras I am

Vice President of Muslim Student Association (we have done some multi cultural and interfaith events on campus, I do essentially play role of president in teh club)
inter-club council representative for American Marketing Association (also is a student body position)
President and Founder of Business Economics Finance Achievement on campus (this is in the process, me and my team are planning on doing a lot of various events in the community and on campus)
Vice President of Fitness Club
member of Phi Theta Kappa
i have an accounting internship at a private accounting firm
during high school, I volunteered over 800 hours in Financial Development/Outreach at the American Red Cross
theres also a couple of other clubs that I am simply a part of
My biggest problem probably is that in high school, my gpa was mediocre at best, I did the International Baccaleaurate Program and had a 2.9unwtd gpa 3.4wtd gpa. I did however have some-what decent SATs of 2100 (780m,650cr,670wr) Sat 2's (760m level2, the others i wont mention ;) )
Please chance me based on some of these extra's and my gpa/some classes

I apologize if I made it too long, which I did, but I simply am looking for some help.

Hi I am also a prospective transfer student to NYU. Which community college to you go to?

Hey, I go to a community college in Northern California, in Sacramento, what about yourself?

If money is a factor, I hope you guys are reading about the stingy financial aid packages given out in the NYU transfer thread. My app to Stern is still pending but I’m reasonably sure I’ll be going to Georgetown in the fall. They give out a lot more money and you still have a great shot at making it to wall street.

Take the class. If the class is listed as a prerequisite then it’s important. You can apply with 100 credits but NYU will only give you credit for 64. So if you have 70 credits they will only take 64 which is not that bad.

Other than the class, it seems you’re in good shape. No one can really tell you where you stand because no one on these threads is qualified to do so. If they do, then they are just BSing you. Just be aware that Stern is highly competitive so make sure you have safety schools. Also, take into account what @Buegie stated. Applicants posted their FA award and many had to take out $40,000+ loans to attend.

If you’re from a CCC try applying to Haas or UCLA. Your numbers will make you competitive and since they place priority on CCC students, you will have a good shot. Marshall is another good choice. Just don’t place all your effort on Stern because it is a highly selective school.

I got into Stern and I didn’t really have great extra curricular activities except for some nice internships. My gpa was good and SAT score was good. I wrote a sincere essay and I think this was the strongest part of my qualifications. Good luck!

@LondonKim

Can I take a look at your essay, if you don’t mind? I myself got rejected as a sophomore transfer and am looking to reapply next year.

I go to a community college in Los Angeles. I also used to be a member of MSA and I actually created our first business econ club at my college as well, what a coincidence. But I want to make a finance club because I’m a finance major and think it would be more interesting for me. I also have 3 internships, one at a boutique firm, one at scottrade, and one at a financial advisory firm. My gpa right now is 3.82 and hopefully will end up at around 3.87.

Thanks for all your responses.

@love4finance
im really impressed at your three internships, that will most definitely help you and set you apart from the rest, i think it will also play a major factor in placing you into banking (i assume thats what you’re interested in) Also, how cool! We both have been a part of MSA and started similar types of clubs.

@MitchAPalooza, thanks for your advice. I will also be applying to Haas, UCLA, and USC-Marshall, my cousin and his really good friend both transferred to Haas and USC respectively. I am also definitely trying for Cornell AEM, Georgetown, Middlebury (crapshoot), UPenn (another crapshoot), Claremont Mckenna, and a couple others (some more crapshoots) . I will also in the fall be taking Differential Equations and Calc 3 (Ive heard this helps)
