NYU Stern undergraduate Finance or Georgetown Economics?

Hi CC, I am just wondering whether NYU Stern had better placement than Georgetown in BB. Due to NYU's geographical location, I initially thought that it would be a better school to go for IB, but after reading about Georgetown's presence on the street and the cut throat competition of NYU I'm not so sure now. I will most likely be applying to only one out of the two, so would a NYU stern finance major be better than a Georgetown Economics major in terms of job placement in BB? Thank you in advance and please feel free to correct any incorrect information that I may have included. :)

Hey
I’m in the position although I know that Georgetown also has a finance major (undergrad BS) so you don’t have to study economics… I think I’ll just go to which ever one is cheapest (most likely Gtown) even though I like Stern better.

@americanfrench Thanks for your reply! Does that mean that in your opinion, Georgetown and NYU would have similar placement into BBs in NYC after graduation?

Yeah pretty much, from what I’ve heard, Gtown is great for Goldman, good for others. Stern might be harder if you’re not top 25%. Although, the top students would not have any problems getting jobs at any bank.
Also, a lot of kids from Stern intern at small boutique banks during the year because of location. I enjoy DC a lot but New York is my city so I would go to Stern (I like urban/suburban campuses though). Just depends on where you want to go for 4 years. I would say top Stern student > top Gtown Student but the opposite for an average student.
You should consider MIT and Wharton which also have finance majors. Less prestigious but still good for BB, UVA and UMich and Northwestern.

all of the BBs and elite boutiques are swarming with Stern students

You should note that Goergetown’s number one recruiter is Goldman.

that is different than being one of top schools Goldman recruits from - Georgetown is definitely one of them but I don’t think it places as much as Wharton, Harvard, Stern, and Duke.

Also there is severe lack of Elite Boutique recruiting at Gtown.

For IB its a no brainer to go Stern

Btw Banks that take a ton of Stern students are GS, CS, Barcap, Evercore

@americanfrench‌ @qwertyzxc‌ thank you all for your replies, much appreciated

@qwertyzxc‌ Which Duke major is best for IB? I have a strong preference for Finance over Econ but Duke only offers it as a minor…

I’d say Northwestern and UMich (Ross) are far more prestigious than Stern is.

@sgballsta why do you believe that UMich Ross & Northwestern >> Stern?

In terms of both job placements and stats of admitted students, both UMich and Stern are equal. But yes I’d agree Northwestern > stern and UMich ross

@Jarjarbinks23‌ UMich has better job placement, overall, and their students have higher salaries, generally. Plus, the overall feel of the school is better, but that’s subjective and varies from student to student.

@sgballsta Yea UMich probably does have better professional placement since the school is better than NYU as a whole. NYU’s average salary per graduate is $53k/year, which isn’t much in New York. But on that note, NYU Stern and UMich Ross are on equal footing as far as prestige and salaries go.

By the way I saw you got into Georgetown, are you going there? It has a great representation in major firms like the 2 schools we just talked about.

@Jarjarbinks23‌ I’m not sure yet. Hopefully, I get into Cornell or UChicago (pipe dream, lol). Thanks for asking though. I know you go into Stern though. Are you going?

@sgballsta lol nah, Stern is just too expensive. Apparently my family has too many assets, and my college counselor told me even “aid-generous” schools like Cornell would give me nothing. And no school (unless it is HYPSM) is worth a $250k+ price tag.

I was fooled by NYU’s statement" “The average scholarship+grant package is $26,000”.

So I’m probably gonna go to an in-state school, most likely UCLA or UC Berkeley.

And in regards to UChicago, yea that place is crazy… 8% acceptance rate isnt it? Right up there with the ivy schools.

@Jarjarbinks23‌ Yeah it’s insane how costly Stern is. Their financial aid packages are shit; they just manipulate statistics to trick students. Hopefully you get into Berkeley or UCLA. Especially Berkley. So much more convenient, in terms of location and cost for you, and it’s arguably a much better school than NYU. Best of luck man.

@sgballsta thank you… by the way what is your top choice? U chicago?

@Jarjarbinks23‌ If accepted, of course. but that’s a pipe dream at this point. I’m hoping for Cornell, CMU, or maybe Rice.
