Since I was very little, I had been inundated with propaganda about columbia (both my parents work there). I'm really interested in majoring in business/econ. Now would you guys reccommend going to NYU Stern or Columbia for business/econ (Columbia doesnt have a business program so I would go to Columbia for econ). Does the big "ivy" name trump Stern?

Also, i know Columbia College has a 10.4% admission rate, does anyone know the stats for Stern?

My stats (briefly) are as follows:

GPA: 3.92~ (Magnet school- Top 100 by Worth Magazine)
PSATS: 232
SATs: 2300+ (predicted)
Took AP Calc BC as a sophmore (got a 5, but a B+ in the class which dropped my GPA)

EC's
Federal Reserve Team (National Finalist)
Model UN (Awards at HYP, MIT, BC, George washington)
AIME/AMC12 Qualifier/Top-scorer
A couplee of Science awards (Science Olympiad, Science fairs)
Lots of clubs/groups yadadada... (leadership position)

Work:
2 years 'research' at Columbia
Starbucks- 2 years
Volunteer at NY Presby hospital

Should get 1 AMAZING recc, and 1 mediocre one

I know that for Columbia, my stats are considered about average for the most part... anyone know what it's like for Stern? And I got a letter from Stern, is this pure propaganda or otherwise? thx in advance.

I recommend Columbia Econ personally...unless your ultimate goal is to join a major IB upon graduation, in which case, Ster and Columbia would be equals and you can chose based on preference.

"But I don't really care about the money factor..."

WOW... free Ivy League education... I wouldn't be so cavalier about money... there is something to be said about graduating with no student loans, especially if grad school might be a possibility.

Actually, I could see a student choosing NYU-Stern over Columbia, if it wasn't for the fact that Columbia was free... it's a question of the kind of education one was seeking: practical business vs. theoretical econ.
And though Columbia is more "prestigious," I don't think NYU is THAT far behind in the grand scheme of things... it is a great school,

That said, if one was competitive for admission to Columbia, but wanted to get an undergrad business education, then one should also look at Wharton/UPenn.

I agree with #1 and #3, but what on earth makes you think Columbia professors are better teachers than NYU professors????
There is ZERO evidence for this. You do know that both are RESEARCH universities, and make hire decisions based on research and ability to win grants... and that teaching HAS ABSOLUTELY ZERO to do with the hiring process.

Are you sure you are majoring in economics as this does not sound like a sound financial decision :(

Then you will be very happy with when NYU offers you very little money in terms of scholarships and grants (as they are notorious for their bad FA packages) :)

My question is why you are limiting yourself to Stern vs Columbia. Is it because this is an issue with your parents?

If you get a free ride at Columbia, that implies at least one of your parents is on the faculty and that Columbia would also pay at least a portion of comparable tuition elsewhere. Wharton, Sloan, Haas, could all be on your map. I suspect that your parents would prefer you either to get a broader education or to choose a university where, if you change your mind about business, there are other options comparable to Columbia's. There are also LACs with excellent alumni networks where an undergrad econ or math or even humanities education plus some internships could head you right to Wall Street.
