NYU Stern vs. NU

So this is a tough choice for me. NU used to be my top choice (after Wharton, and even before Wharton at some pts), but lately I'm warming up to Stern (business school) a lot.

I'm posting this in the NU boards too, lol, I know it'll be biased in both. We'll see who can produce a better argument.

Basically, I want to go into business eventually. However, this is not set in stone and I'm very open, but I would say I'm 80% sure I'm going to be a businessperson when I "grow up."

Northwestern: GREAT school all round. In like, every way!
NYU: If i decide I want to become an anthropology major (just an example), CAS @ NYU isn't as good overall as NU (if you're going to refute this, please don't get nasty about it to me or to each other). Stern is a really good school, though.

NYU: Internships! Really good chance of getting job upon graduation because of connections and location, and that is a large factor in where u go to college isn't it? Wanting to get a great job later
Northwestern: I don't really know.

NYU: NYC. I love the city. It's convenient, things to do all the time, right outside your doorstep.
**Northwestern: **Evanston, close to Chicago but not that close. Forty minutes or so is still quite a distance. Evanston has great food, but NYC definitely has great food.

Northwestern: Has a real college campus
NYU: Students are a part of the city, I kind of want a real "campus," and of course safety is a small issue.

NYU: I'd be a Stern Scholar and would get some merit money and more money used on me in general by the school, lol
**Northwestern: **Well. I wouldn't be recognized like that at first, anyway.

NYU: CLOSE. Living in NYC suburbs, so I could go home quickly if I need to.
**Northwestern: **3 hour plane ride, not to mention time to get to NU from the airport- thus would be more expensive to travel, too.

Northwestern: Quarter system
NYU: Semester system (I don't really know what to think about these. The breaks are diff @ NU, and school starts and ends differently, but you get to take more classes and stuff...)

Northwestern: really, really cold. i'm sure i could get used to it. and it's by the lake. i love that lake, lol.
NYC: used to the temperatures

Anyone care to refute any of these pts or offer insight? This is driving me crazy, why can't I attend both?

I have same, as of now, ( waiting on ivies) decision to make, except mines not Stern, just CAS. If youre gonna go into buisness, go to Stern over Northwestern. This is coming from a person who will probably choose northwestern over NYU.

what would your major be?

at NU? I dunno, maybe economics and something int'l relations related on the side?

are you in NU?

If you want to do business, easy decision: NYU. Stern is 2nd only to Wharton for undergard business...its a ridiculous pipeline to Wall St. FYI, even at Stern, about half your classes will be in CAS (eg. the econ. requirements, MAP requirements, you can minor in CAS, etc.)...so you'll be getting a solid liberal arts education in addition to the business.

dude- i got into NU, i'm not in it right now or anything

thx for the info, jw

It seems to me like you're leaning towards Stern... your comparison only had about two positive factors for Northwestern: it's a "great" school and it has a campus. + If you choose Stern, you'll be in my class. :)

how easy/hard is it to transfer into stern from cas? am i correct that in between NU and NYU CAS for businees , NU is better?

Jwblue
As a Stern undergrad, I know that you are required to take 32 credits at CAS, but is there a reverse requirement , i.e., how many credits are you required to take at Stern as a Stern undergrad, and what is the maximum # of credits you can take at CAS (if you wanted to double major)

"how easy/hard is it to transfer into stern from cas?"

-Not sure. I know its not impossible, but it can be very difficult since Stern is small school with very little space, and Stern requirements are different. There are no GPA cutoffs or anything, and this is really done on a case by case basis-you'd have to contact the Internal Transfer people at NYU.

"am i correct that in between NU and NYU CAS for businees , NU is better?"

-Not really. If you are talking about econ. majors...in Chi-town, I'd give the edge to Northwestern, in NY, NYU clearly has the edge. The bulge bracket firms recruit in both places. The economics departments at both schools are very top notch. One advantage that NYU has is that CAS students can take Stern classes (its helpful to brush up on finance before i-banking interviews...what better way to do it then take an actual class), while NU has no undergrad business school When you talk about whats better for business, something you have to understand is that these are not business schools, and econ. is NOT finance, its not a business major in any sense, but a liberal arts one. A student at either NYU CAS or NW or is going to have show he's cut out for wall st.

Chocoholic--I'm not too sure about your question, if you're currently a Stern undergrad, you can answer better than me. I would assume all Stern undergrads are required to take a specific number of credits in Stern (requirements and major stuff), and whatever is left is what they can take in CAS.

jw (or anyone)
my NYU CAS friend recommended I go to NYU, so I said haha, of course she would, she must be biased and she said "no, we hate sternies"

and then i remembered that I did hear that CAS doesn't like sternies or w/e.. I asked her why and she said it's cuz stern kids are really superficial in general. and they've even been booed at the last few graduations.

is the world of banking/business and all that really superficial? i mean, sure, you're dealing w/ money and chasing it, but .. idk. any thoughts on either the business world or stern people?

HAHA, thats funny re: your friend. I don't know why your friend would say that. I was in CAS (philosophy major), and I had friends in both CAS and Stern (even lived with 2 Sternies). But then again, thats just me, I also worked on wall st, I'm probably far greedier than most Stenies.

All joking aside, don't let the stereotypes get to you. Are there some in Stern who are obsessed with money?...of course, its a business school! The entire reason to attend business school is to make a lot of money...is there any other? At the end of the day, Stern still has normal cool people and they are pretty approachable (a good portion of my NYU girlfriends were Sternies).

jw, what are the top three to five jobs sternies go into when they graduate? (probably w/ a finance major, cuz that's most popular)

and lol, thanks for the replies.
