Hey guys. Now that I've heard back from all my colleges, I've been left to decide between NYU Stern and UCLA. I'm torn between the two at the moment, and I would appreciate some input. For UCLA, I would pay in-state tuition which would cost around 32k/year with room & board. For Stern, I received a 26k/year scholarship, which would put tuition at around 39k with room & board. As much as I love the weather and campus life at UCLA, I am also drawn to New York City and Stern itself. If I am planning on pursuing business in the future, would it be better to stay in LA or to go to Stern? Thanks guys.

So, I am no expert on colleges, but my dad is an expert on business for sure. If you are planning on pursuing business in the future, I highly recommend going to New York University because of your scholarship (which is excellent and makes the price more comparable) and the international acclaim of NYU’s business program. Its finance program is ranked #2 in the nation according to US News World Report. Also, because New York City is one of the largest business centers in America, I think the business opportunities and jobs available to someone from a top undergrad-business school like NYUStern would be countless.
UCLA, though it is seen as one of the best public universities in the country, doesn’t exactly have the top notch undergrad-business education acclaim like NYU nor can LA meet New York’s level of business opportunities.
All in all, because of your choice of career and the scholarship, i think it’s a better choice to go to Stern instead of UCLA. Plus New York City is an amazing city. Hope this helps!

If you want to do business, especially finance, go to Stern.

Hi, I chose NYU over UCLA… some aspects were already mentioned but personally, I also considered the fact that you don’t have to apply to the business school after sophomore year… I think that would be really annoying.

Hey, I’m making the exact same choice as you right now and the difference in price for UCLA and Stern are about the same for me.

Even though I haven’t made a final decision, I’m heavily leaning towards NYU. Although I think I probably like UCLA more than I will NYU in terms of campus life and location, Stern does fantastic when it comes to getting ibanking jobs on Wall Street while UCLA only gets a couple kids into LA offices, which have significantly worse exit ops than NY offices. At the end of the day, I think college will be fun wherever I go, so I should look more to the very real issue of career prospects, where Stern totally wins. Also the fact that my bank teller is a UCLA Econ major scares the crap out of me haha.

However, if you’re not planning on going specifically into finance and ibanking, I would say UCLA. Stern is a very sharp point directed at finance, which means that the other aspects of business tend to be put on the side.

West coast finance & east coast finance are quite different. There are many strong banking groups on the west coast, and from what little I know about it schools like Berkeley, Stanford and UCLA all do quite well. On the other hand, it’s generally considered more difficult to recruit for NY from CA and vice versa. If your ultimate goal is to be in New York, then I would suggest you consider NYU.
