Very Simply I am applying to NYU
My GPA is about a 3.3 (It got crushed because i was out of school for three months going from doctor to doctor)
SAT score is 1850
Although these scores are on the low end I am hoping that they get me through the first cut when it comes to admissions.
A little Background Info:
I have participated in about 3 clubs, so i have a good bit of community service hours
I played 2 sports (only Freshman year)
I interned with a Financial Planner this summer
I have 4 years of Business Experience
I have been trading stock options for 4 years
I have been trading stocks for 2 years
I have developed 3 technical trading strategies
2012 I created a social media platform that never took off
2015 I am in works of a smartphone app that targets high school & college kids
With that being said should I apply to the more competitive NYU Stern Specialty school or the more mainstream Arts and Science Program Majoring in Economics or Global Business?
What do I have a better chance getting into?
The reason I ask is because maybe my EA’s will shed some light while my SAT and GPA are slightly below Avg.
Unless you have all As in your quantitative classes (math, chem, physics, stats) and have taken a very stiff courseload in those, I’d say you have almost no chance at Stern and a very low chance in NYU in general. Your ECs don’t blow away anyone.
Should you apply? Maybe retake the SAT – hope to blow away this semester’s grades. But definitely apply broadly to other schools. NYU Stern and NYU is definitely going to be a reach for you.
Took a summer SAT corse to help with my reading score (Retaking it in OCT)
AP Calc - 5
APUSH-4
SAT breakdown
Math- 710
Reading- 590
Writing- 550
Freshman Year I managed to get A’s in My math and Science and History but I got a D in GYM for lack of participation because I was always in the computer lab
Sop Year when I was out of school i did fail my third quarter and finished 4th Q very poorly
Junior Year I got an A in calc and Physics but I got a D in Drama because I cut class 2 times a week to go surfing, fishing last block.
Do you know of any schools that might be a better fit for me?
I hate to say it, but you will need to grow up a bit before you start college. The cutting class to go surfing, the not showing up for gym are bad signals. In college you will need to take some core classes you may not have much interest in and nobody will particularly care if you attend or pass the class. At the price you will be paying for college you really have to be able to put your short-term interests aside and focus on doing well in every class you take.
Certainly apply to NYU as a reach. I’d go with whichever program is less competitive. At the GPA/SAT you have maybe consider at least some schools along the lines of Fairfield, Quinnipiac, Marist, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY New Paltz,
and you’re rather unrepentant too. You made poor choices. Now you’re being limited. The world didn’t explode but your GPA suffered. Now you have to live with that. I hope you have plans to alter your desire for immediate gratification once you get to college. You know about those kids who start terribly and even flunk out but are otherwise capable of doing well in college? You’re not immune – indeed, your past actions may predict some of the same. I wish you luck in altering your path.
@alphatrader314 - Please re-calculate your GPA for only Math, Science, English, History, and Foreign Language courses over the past for years. Exclude gym, art, etc. etc.
This is the actual GPA colleges use.
Did you take the most challenging possible courseload available to you? Can you re-take the SAT for a bit better scores on CR section especially?
If you do all of these (and your re-calculated GPA hits higher) you might be able to do NYU college of arts and sciences as a reach/low reach.
