Hi everyone
I’m planning on applying either ED1 or ED2 to Sterns for economics…I’m waiting on my AP results so I’ll post those when they come in (I took psych, bio, macroecon, and statistics). I’m also planning on taking the SAT again in October (working to get a 2300+) and SAT Math II in November (currently have a 740, but I’m going to practice more over the summer to reach the 800). I’m not sure what my GPA is right now because we usually get those at the end of every year. Last time I checked it was around a 3.72. I go to a STEM school (#4 in the country for STEM education actually) that focuses on engineering, but I’m not willing to go into said field when I’m older.
My extracurriculars include: VP for GirlUp Club (a chapter of the club based on the UN organization, I’m anticipating president), potential editor for the newspaper (have been on staff for three years), editor of the yearbook (also a 3 year staff member), running a jeans drive for the DoSomething Club (another organization based club), part of the DNA Initiative Club (we analyze DNA sequences), FBLA (made it to states this year, running for council for next year). I’m also in ModelUN, Debate Club/JSA, and I’ve taken initiatives for HeforShe and I’m a 2015 group leader for Greenpeace; I’m also the Director of Business for a student-run media company called Julia Darling Media Enterprises (and a staff writer for two sections of the magazine). I also ice skate in my free time.
Volunteering: 2015 Group Leader for Greenpeace; various volunteering opportunities from hospitals, a care center, ACS, and my old karate school (my volunteer work there is teaching the younger children); I also ran a jeans drive at our school as part of our DoSomething Club. I have about 200 hours total, and I’m planning on getting it to at least 250-300 by the end of the summer.
With an outstanding essay and the test grades I’m working to get (and feel confident I will be able to get), do I stand a chance to get in during ED? (I also heard they have more of an open mind during ED and take a lot more people)

The best line “I also ice skate in my free time”.
What did you get on you SAT? You forgot to mention that! You have a lot of extracurriculars which can be helpful, Good luck!
More people are taken in ED because all of those applying early have high caliber so all of them technically can go to that college. Admission officers aren’t any more lenient, they accept more in ED because everyone has great test scores and extracurricular.

Haha I used to take lessons and practice at the rink a few times a week but it’s been 3 years since I was at higher freestyle levels, so I figured paying for coaching, competitions, outfits, etc wouldn’t be worth it if I was competing at really low levels…so it’s just something I do on the side but I teach myself new spins/jumps (I wasn’t sure if that would count for anything, I just thought I’d mention it and give you a background as to why I just threw it on the list).
My first SAT was a 2040, but I’d been dealing with a lot of schoolwork and studying for midterms (which were, unfortunately for me, canceled, so all the time I could’ve been studying for SATs went to midterms that didn’t even happen). I’m going to retest in October and I’m hoping to get the score I’m capable of getting

Just going to update this: creeping closer to a 2300 on the SAT. My AP scores weren’t that great, I canceled them all and I’m going to retake the ones I need next May along with a few others (the new ones will be AP Calc and AP Lang and Comp, possibly APUSH if I have time).
I’m thinking of applying ED 2 because I’ll have all my test scores in and I have time to revise the application a little more and not rush the process.
All the extracurriculars are the same as mentioned above, but I also attended the GirlUp Leadership Summit this year and I may be starting a club for the UNHCR at school this year.
I’m looking into finance at Sterns right now…do I stand a chance with ED 2?

Just realized that maybe finance isn’t part of the undergrad there…is it just the two degrees they offer in business and business+political economy?

No finance is definitely part of the undergrad there. Shoot for around a 1500/1600 on the SAT and you will have a good shot.
I’m guessing your a girl, so that will help your chances of getting into Stern since its 62% men and 38% women.
A 2040 is not that bad for Stern depending on the breakdown. Stern cares much more about CR+M than writing, although it is still viewed.

Yeah I’ve got the writing down (usually 800s or close with the essay), but math is getting closer to high 700s and CR is in the 700s. I think the 2300 is for a personal satisfaction (and for other schools) but Stern is my #1 choice.
I am a girl, yeah. I haven’t heard that about the stats before, so thanks!
Is there anything else that’d help? I’m planning on visiting the campus in the following weeks but I don’t know if they really care about that.

Yeah visiting definitely helps. Also you have probably heard this but NYU is very stingy so if you can pay the full tuition without needing any aid, you will be better off in admissions.
Also, other considerations are your race. Since Stern is heavily Asian, it is slightly harder for them to get in (rumors).
I’m applying ED 1 next year.
Good Luck!

Yep, definitely have heard about the tuition bit.
Asian in general? (I’m south Asian)
Good luck to you too! Thanks for the advice

              Yeah Asian in general. Thanks.

Does anyone know what the AP/SAT subject requirements are for Stern? Would I be able to ED and send them my results as they come in, or are they really strict about getting everything during ED?

Given that Stern has twice as many “Asians” as “Whites,” it seems like a stretch to suggest that being Asian could be a negative factor in an application.
Far more important for this applicant is her gender, which is strongly underrepresented in the existing student body.

              Thanks @NickFlynn!
I’m guessing they look for a lot more female applicants then. I’m just concerned about the AP/SAT subject requirements, I can’t seem to find them in that link (if that’s why you provided it to begin with).

Here’s the link to the standardized test scores requirements, which honestly seem a little ambiguous to me on a quick read:
https://www.nyu.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/apply/freshmen-applicants/instructions/standardized-tests.html
It actually looks like to me that you can just submit the SAT…subject tests are discussed as an alternative to submitting the SAT in the first section. I can’t see anywhere where they seem required.
I’d shoot them an email if you can’t make better sense of that than I did.

I don’t think you need to retake a 740 for 800 but if you want to take another test take a different subject I think. You have a good chance though even with the 2040, though bringing it up would obviously help. Good luck!
Chance me back:

Thanks again @NickFlynn! I see what you mean, I think I’ll email them just in case.
@ptkid16, the 740 was actually on a practice test (sorry, that was unclear!). I’m working to bring the SAT up, a 2300+ is my goal.

              I did! Thanks
Does anyone happen to have opinions on the business degree vs. the BPE degree? I like the idea of traveling and experiencing different cultures every year, but I’m not sure if it’s a better program than the regular business degree.

BPE is very selective and they only take about 50 kids per class of 600 or whatever it is. BPE does not necessarily look for kids with higher scores, but they look for kids that fit the mold of the program more. You can always just check it off on the app and if you don’t get in you will still get reviewed for regular Stern.

For Stern, if I do AP Calc AB and get a decent grade (A or B range), will they let skip calc? Or is it recommended that I take AP Calc BC? And if I end up getting a grade in the C range in BC, will I be asked to repeat Calc at Stern? (Or would there be a chance of getting rescinded from the school?)
