NYU student here: Ask Away!

I remember being in your position a couple of years ago, so if any of you guys have any questions, feel free to hit me with them. You can PM me if it is private, or post below.

I will do my best answering as many as possible.

what school do you attend?
quick [non bias] synopsis of freshman dorms? it's hard to pull information out of the long descriptions on the website and the scattered information amongst the CC threads.
is NYU as holistic in the admissions process as they appear?

that should be good for now, ha.

When did you hear back?

Im in CAS right now. Was GSP'd. If you want to read up on GSP, read my posts in the RD to GSP thread.

Freshman dorms...ughh I was hoping you guys wouldnt ask this, because the differences are all a matter of preference. No one can tell you what dorm YOU will like.

However, Rubin is good. Its cheap. It has a dining hall. No ac though.

Brittany is nice, big rooms.

Hayden is generally the most social and also has nice rooms.

Uhall and 3rd north are apt style. I never really cared for this, so im not going to bother describing it.

Any specific questions about the dorms, I will answer. Its too hard for me to make broad generalizations without writing a 15 page essay which i personally do not have time for.

haha, totally understandable.
i visited Rubin during an open house and LOVED it. hahaha, the pretentiousness of living on 5th avenue i simply cannot resist. but i've read some crap on here about it being "antisocial" or whatnot. i know that it's all about preference, but i consider myself to be pretty social and would like a fairly social dorm. i also know friends is what you make it at NYU. and the AC isn't really an issue, is it? i mean, by the time it becomes brutally hot in NYC school is out, or at least close, right?

also, what about Goddard or Weinstein?

Goddard is an explorations dorm which means you need to fill out a form, and they group you by interest...etc. Never cared for this or even been in there, so i dont know anymore than that.

Weinstein is nice. Has a nice food court. Has brick walls which may be intimidating but its new, clean and nice.

In rubin, the ac could be an issue. It depends on the weather. It gets REALLY hot in there at times (sept, april, may etc), so eveyone has their fan cranking. Its not intolerable, but certainly it can get hot. However it all depends on the weather. If it doesnt get hot in april, or cools off quickly in sept youll be fine. Its a good dorm though. All in all, the weather is somewhat of a minor inconvenience.

As for being anti social, it certainly isnt. All freshman dorms are social because you are freshman. Doors open etc.

Wait until you become an upper classman if you want to see anti-social...

that's exactly what i've heard. the rush of NYU ends sophomore year and suddenly becomes very lonely. thanks for your input, haha, i think i'll stick with 5th avenue. =)

When did you hear back from NYU?

I have no idea what specific day it was. Besides this was over 2 years ago.

I know, but if you can remember that it came later than you'd thought, or maybe that it came in March...I don't know - I'm just freaking out here and trying to see if I'll here back any earlier than April 1st

yea, you do hear earlier. Some kids get invited to "sunday at the square", which takes place on april 1st, so you obviously hear about it beforehand. I think the ones that have stats to view nyu as a safety school hear back earlier than rest of RD kids.

is there an intramural volleyball team at CAS? how hard is it to get in?

There are a number of intramural sports at NYU, including volleyball.

They are not hard to get in at all. You simply sign up for them and you are in. However, these are not to be confused with club sports. In Intramurals there are usually no practices, and you just come play a couple of games and that is it.

Because space is often an issue, some of these tournaments are single elimination. I played in a football intramural league where we lost once and that was it.

you mentioned about club sports, are they the same as teams? do you know how often the practices are? thanks for answering =]

JJim1919:

1) What other schools were you admitted to and why did you choose to go to NYU?
2) If you had to make the decision all over again, would you still choose NYU? Why?
3) What is your most memorable academic experience? Why?
4) What do you like the least about NYU?
5) How is the academic atmosphere in CAS? Are there enough "dorks" who like to talk about school/books/classes?
6) Is the school separation really as artificial and bureaucratic as it seems from the outside?

I realize you were in GSP but I think you have to take intro classes for it. How would you rate the difficulty of these intro classes?
Do you feel like as an NYU student, you've really taken hold of everything available to you in Manhattan?
Though you probably haven't done study abroad, do you have any experiences with it? Is it overhyped at NYU?

OK, as a Mom here I have to ask. How in the heck do you move into the dorm? May seem like a stupid question but having visited this weekend I cannot fathom where one can even park the car? A lot of people have said order from BB and B and have it delivered or pick it up in the city or buy everything when you get there but in the end you still have to move it out eventually too. I am really curious on this one...

I am a high school junior and NYU is the top school I want to go to. I want to do something in fashion journalism and I was wondering if you would know what I should major in. I heard English is good to take for that field.

MOM, For freshmen move in day is a Sunday - the city is realtively quiet. NYU clears the streets in front of the dorms. I believe they paid for the neighborhood residents to park in garages for the day! Move in was an absolute breeze. I'm on a low floor and didn't have to wait for an elevator which may be why it was so easy.
