someone in my school told me that NYU's for rich kids. I want to go there to be in the music scene in the city though that put me off of it. she pointed out this "documentary" called my freshman year about an nyu freshman. is this an accurate depiction?

All sorts of weird people go to NYU. Not just rich kids. It's basically like any other school where there will be rich kids whose parents paid their entire tuition costs but there are also regular kids who attend to. Also, NYU has a different sort of campus where it's right in the city and the buildings are sprinkled around the Greenwich village so when you walk out of the dorm you may have to take a cab or something to get to get to class. It's the most independent college life that I've seen because you're living the New York lifestyle but also just happen to be on campus at the same time. Hard to explain but it's awesome.

Oh and i've never heard of that movie but don't let one person's opinion put you off. NYU is so sick, and sounds like a great fit for you since you're into music.

It's funny how you state about the music scene. Usually, when I associate NYU and it's student body, the first thing I think about are the kids that are into the indie rock scene. I always saw NYU as a school where the "hipsters" attended. Go there anyway (or apply there)! Trust me, you'll fit in.

I don't know about the documentary that you are referring to...but I attended NYU and you can be sure there are all kinds of kids there. The music scene in NYC is awesome and you can find any kind of music you're into. I loved NYU, but it's not for everyone. It really is like living in the city and going to classes, not much of a campus feel. I ended up staying in the village for a long time after I graduated. It was some of the best times of my life. I was in the village recently for the art show and boy, I sure do miss it.

There are a bunch of colleges in NYC other than NYU, so if you're just going for the city life, definitely look at some of the other schools. The New School is right near NYU and has a few different undergrad schools--Eugene Lang is the liberal arts college, Parsons is art/design, Mannes is music, and there's a jazz school which I think might just be called Jazz, haha. Columbia's uptown, obviously, and so is Hunter, which is arguably the best of the CUNY system. There are others, as well, and they all offer something different academically.

And in my experience, most college kids are some kind of ******bag. It's not something you can avoid. And even if you did decide that NYU was the school for you and you applied and loved it, and everyone in your classes/dorm was an obnoxious rich kid (which, as everyone else has said, is unlikely), you'd still have a city full of people to be friends with.
